The indirect maximal ventilatory volume: Reappraisal of the validity of FEV0.75 × 40 for routine use

Mauricio J. Dulfano; Sadamu Ishikawa

Abstract Maximal ventilatory volumes (MVV) calculated from single forced expiratory volume (FEV) performed with the McKesson Vitalor were found to correlate closely with the directly obtained MVV in a wide range of chronic respiratory disease patients. The significance of this correlation is noteworthy for its practical implications. Its reliability under routine conditions and the simplicity of the instrument make the procedure suitable for use at bedside, in the physicians office, or in the pulmonary laboratory.
