The cultivar BRSMG Madreperola, recommended for cultivation in Minas Gerais, has the feature of maintaining a light grain color for a longer period than other Carioca grain cultivars. The yield potential is high and the resistance level good to the major anthracnose races in the region.

3 RESUMO - A mancha-angular (Phaeoisariopsis griseola) e a ferrugem (Uromyces appendiculatus) sao algumas das mais prejudiciais doenAas do feijoeiro na regiao do Tri‚ngulo Mineiro, Minas Gerais. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a influŒncia das semeaduras sucessivas na severidade da man- cha-angular e da ferrugem, bem como as perdas na produAao em decorrŒncia dessas doenAas. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em condiAies de campo, nas safras outono-inverno (1994) e das AEguas (1994/95), cada uma com trŒs semeaduras sucessivas de feijao. A severidade da mancha-angular e da ferrugem aumentou significativamente da primeira para a terceira semeadura, atingindo nIvel mais elevado na œltima. As semeaduras anteriores foram a fonte de inUculo para os cultivos subse- qentes. AplicaAies de fungicida foram eficientes no controle das doenAas, permitindo um aumento significativo da produAao de graos, quando comparado com o controle. A mancha-angular apresentou maior incidŒncia no outono-inverno e nas AEguas, e a ferrugem, apenas no outono-inverno. Nessas safras as condiAies climAEticas (temperatura e umidade relativa) favoreceram a evoluAao das doenAas, resultando num aumento da severidade. Houve uma correlaAao negativa e altamente significativa entre a severidade da mancha-angular e da ferrugem com a produAao de graos nas duas safras. ABSTRACT - Angular leaf spot (Phaeoisariopsis griseola) and rust (Uromyces appendiculatus) are some of the most damaging bean diseases in the region of Tri‚ngulo Mineiro, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experiments were conducted under field conditions during the 1994 dry season (under sprinkler irrigation) and 1994/95 rainy season, with three bean planting dates in each season. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of these sequential plantings on the severity of angular leaf spot and rust in field beans, as well as the yield reduction caused by these diseases. The severity of angular leaf spot and rust increased significantly from the first to the third planting time and reached the highest severity in the third. Previous bean cultivation were the source of inoculum for the subsequent plantings. Fungicide applications were efficient in controlling both diseases. Bean grain yield was significantly higher when fungicide was used compared to the untreated control. Angular leaf spot showed the highest severity in both dry and rainy season. The rust, only in the 1994 in the dry season. The seasons showed climatic conditions (temperature and relative humidity) more favorable for diseases evolution, resulting in increase of severity. A negative and highly significant correlation was observed between the severity of angular leaf spot and rust with the grain yield in the two seasons.

BRS Esteio is a common bean cultivar with black grains of excellent cooking quality, suited for cultivation in 21 Brazilian States. In 77 trials of Value for Cultivation and Use, the cultivar had a normal cycle (90 days), an average yield of 2,529 kg ha-1, which is 8.1% higher than that of the control cultivars, a high yield potential (4,702 kg ha-1), upright growth, tolerance to lodging, and moderate resistance to anthracnose.

The bean cultivar BRSMG Uniao as a new option of a bean cultivar with jalo grains for the state of Minas Gerais. The cultivar BRSMG Uniao had an average grain yield of 9.8% above the mean of the controls (Jalo EEP 558 and BRS Radiante) and was resistant to powdery-mildew.

The performance of Brazilian students in reading tests, both national and international, have been worrisome lately. However, it is widely known that fluency in reading is essential for both personal growth and national development. In this study, we present a prototype of a digital system platform, based on a UCD (User Centered Design) approach, to detect language impediments that can negatively impact literacy acquisition in schoolchildren. This system is based on a battery of tests created earlier by one of the authors (Leonor Scliar-Cabral). The initial results indicate that this digital system has the potential to improve on the original tests battery, making it more effective and easy to deploy, with the promise to help improve the competence and reading fluency of Brazilian elementary school students.
