Nazleeni Samiha Haron; Mohd Khuzaimi Mahamad; Izzatdin Abdul Aziz; Mazlina Mehat

This research paper proposes an aarchitecture for implementing a water quality monitoring system for the aquaculture industry. The system would enable monitoring of the water quality remotely via GSM. Conventional method used by aqua farms requires technical staff to visit ponds at designated time and perform manual testing on the water quality. Consequently, the technique consumes a lot of time and effort. This research project would focus on developing a prototype that can evaluate data collected through three criteria: Dissolved oxygen level, pH level, and temperature level. The system would also be able to send alert messages upon detecting degradation of water quality in the pond via SMS.

Izzatdin Abdul Aziz; Sajee Mahamad; Mazlina Mehat; Nazleeni Samiha

This paper proposes a navigation aid for the blind using echolocation principle and ultrasonic sensors. The device is for obstacles avoidance by detecting near objects in front of the user and shall trigger an audible alarm. Based on the echolocation principle, the ultrasonic beam is emitted in a certain direction in space through a transmitter. The beam is reflected from objects it encounters on its way; a matching receiver detects the reflected beam and the distance to the object is calculated based on time difference between emitting and receiving beam. Experimental results are presented. It could plausibly deduce that the device produced is suitable to be use as a navigation aid for the visually impaired.

Electronic Content Management Systems use and implementation in highly integrated businesses

Noreen Izza Arshad; Mazlina Mehat; Mohamed Imran

Many organizations have invested large amounts of money in implementing Electronic Content Management Systems (ECMS), which refers to the technologies used to manage, store, and deliver business-related information across the organization. However, research indicates that many ECMS implementations fail to yield the kind of information sharing that is useful for business process executions. From the IS literature point of view, this is not because of the technologies, but it is due to ways ECMS is implemented and used which is not aligned with organizations way of doing business. Therefore, this paper explores how organizations that emphasize high integration and low standardization of business processes termed as Coordination use and implement ECMS to support its business operations. We suggest guidelines that explain the ways ECMS should be used and implemented in Coordination organizations that include (1) ways to use ECMS for sharing business process-related information, (2) ECMS infrastructure, (3) ways to manage content and (4) administration of ECMS. These findings are grounded in the analysis of qualitative data from one case study. The finding is significant for business and IT managers because it will guide them with ways to use ECMS and gain more benefits from these types of systems.

A Multi-domain Framework for Modelling Educational Games: Towards the Development of Effective Educational Games

Mifrah Ahmad; Lukman Ab. Rahim; Noreen Izza Arshad; Mazlina Mehat

A recent study conducted by the authors indicates the lack of methods and techniques to create a model for educational games, and using these models for software engineering activities such as validation. The complex nature of an educational game covers various knowledge domains such as learning theories, subject being taught, rules and regulations in activities, and gaming environment. This warrants for modelling to be part of the educational game development to enhance and ensure effectiveness. In relation to that, this paper proposes a multi-domain framework consisting of four major domains, namely, game environment, game play, learning theories and subject matter. Each domain is equipped with respective game elements based on their definition. Consequently, the implicit relationships between these elements and domains are presented with the aim of highlighting how these elements relates to each other to gain effectiveness. The result presented in this paper is the framework and implicit relationship that is created by systematic literature review.

This paper proposes a mean to produce 3-D image from the SEG-Y data format in order to assist in visualizing data for analysis purposes. The information regarding the SEG-Y data conversion into 3-D image is collected and studied. SEG-Y data format are usually represented in a 2-D image and very few method had been explored to represent it in a 3-D form. Evolutionary method had been applied to conduct the study, which consist of interviewing experts from an oil and gas company. A study on existing 2-D imaging system is presented to further understand the process flow of converting SEG-Y data format into a visualized form. As a conclusion, three elements should exist in the system to be developed; it should include an analysis tool, able to calculate hydrocarbon maturity and able to conduct thorough data testing.

A proposed design for noise reduction algorithm in seismograph on High Performance Computing using F-K filter

Izzatdin Abdul Aziz; Thayalan Sandran; Nazleeni Samiha Haron; Mazlina Mehat

This paper proposes a design of noise reduction algorithm for seismic data on a High Performance Computing (HPC) environment. The algorithm of interest is the F-k filter which can be optimized by executing it using parallel processing architecture. The implementation of the above mentioned noise filtering technique comprises of 3 stages which are Fast Fourier Transform followed by F-k filtering and finally inverse of Fast Fourier Transformation. Each of the slave nodes in the cluster would have the complete filtering algorithms and would be fed with the Seismic Shot Records in the form of binary codes. The number of Shot Records that would be given to a node at a given instance varies according to the complexity of each Shot Record. Load balancing is one of the major concerns for this project and that would be accomplished by the master node which acts as the coordinator for the entire process.

Environmental sustainability is the direction where every nation including Malaysia is heading towards. The ever rising environmental issues on industrial pollution and daily life activities affecting our rivers, oceans, extinction of certain plant species and fish species as well deforestation had produced serious consequences that bring negative implication to the world. The Malaysian government has taken steps to overcome these problems through the implementation of 11th Malaysia Plan where one of the main key areas is creating green environment and sustainability nation. In order to realize this focus, Malaysian government needs the cooperation of the society. An environmental caring society could only be established if this habit is cultivated at young age. One obvious method to nurture environmental friendly practices is through education for primary school children. A local school were targeted and studied in terms of assessing the current syllabus as well as to ensure the limitations of available tool to guide the teachers in educating the children. In this study, a solution in the form of mobile based application incorporating standard four syllabuses on environmental education topic has been proposed to overcome the limitations. The prototype was tested among primary school children and received positive feedbacks indicating that the proposed solution is a long term remedy to protect the environment from further vandalism and to recover the nature from current pollution.

A review of modelling languages for adventure educational games

Ana Syafqah Zahari; Lukman Ab. Rahim; Mazlina Mehat

The development of educational games is expensive as educational games are complex programs. Modelling is a known method to handle the complexity of educational games and reduce development cost via automatic code generation. This paper reviews several modelling languages for modelling educational games under the adventure genre. The objective of the review is to assess the coverage of these modelling languages against known adventure genre and flow theory concepts. The assessment result shows that existing modelling languages do not cover all concepts in the adventure genre and flow theory. The effect of not covering these concepts towards game development and game effectiveness as a learning tool are also discussed.

CO 2 corrosion rate determination mechanism implementing de Waard-Milliams model for oil & gas pipeline

Wan Mohammad Aflah Mohammad Zubir; Izzatdin Abdul Aziz; Nazleeni Samiha Haron; Jafreezal Jaafar; Mazlina Mehat

Billions of ringgits are consistently being invested by the oil and gas companies to ensure pipeline integrity, especially to address problems caused by pipelines. However, the existing solutions in predicting corrosion occurrence often lead to an extremely high cost to be implemented. Worse, the current implementations require manual data entry, which lengthen the time taken for processing in order to obtain a reliable corrosion prediction. If a corroded pipeline failed to be predicted much earlier, the pipes might burst and will cause a significant chain of events that will affect the aqua eco-system. The companies will suffer huge financial losses to mitigate the catastrophic situation. Hence, a better pipeline corrosion determination mechanism needs to be developed to address the issues found in this dissertation. Through early prediction on the corrosion occurence, it will provide the user with the knowledge for a better decision making. This paper will deliberate on a system that predicts corrosion rate using the deWaard- Milliams model. Arduino UNO R3 was used in this project, in predicting the corrosion rate. As a proof of concept and performance, simulations were carried out using synthetic dataset to test the efficiency of the proposed system. Synthetic data was generated through the Gaussian function in Java. The proposed prototype was tested. Three types of testing were conducted which are data quality test, accuracy test and corrosion rate analysis. Data quality test is to ensure the synthetic data generated are closely matched with real data. Accuracy test evaluates the predicted corrosion rate against the real field data obtained from literature studies. Corrosion rate analysis provides an overview and comparison between the effects of the parameters determining the corrosion rate and the predicted corrosion rate. The results exhibit the capability of the mechanism to accurately predict the corrosion rate.
