Activity recognition refers to the ability of a machine/device to recognize the activity of users. This area of research has attracted many works especially related to the context aware and ubiquitous computing area. Wearable accelerometers have been explored for this activity recognition purpose; however the impracticality of attaching accelerometers to the user presents significant issues. Accelerometers today are embedded in many mobile devices. This paper explores the potential and possibility of using these accelerometer data to determine user activity recognition. The initial experiments show encouraging results with a very good accuracy rate of 92%. A simple prototype developed supports the implementation of the recognition process conducted.

Educational institutes compete to achieve higher ranking in different world ranking systems. This is because higher ranking gives the institute more recognition worldwide. Webometrics is one of the most famous ranking systems for high learning institutions. The study tries to investigate the relation between Webometrics ranking and WCAG conformance. Does WCAG conformance affect Webometrics? Is this effect significant? The study also investigates the relation between WCAG conformance and search engines ranking. The aim of this study is to find out whether accessibility can be used as a tool for search engines optimization or not. Results indicate that there is a positive relation between Webometrics and WCAG conformance. Though the results showed a weak correlation between measured variables, the trend was always positive. As for WCAG conformance and search engines ranking, results showed a weak positive trend almost in all cases which indicates that accessibility could be recommended as a tool for search engines optimization.

Audience Response Systems (ARS) are used to achieve active learning in lectures and large group environments by facilitating interaction between the presenter and the audience. However, their use is discouraged by the requirement for specialist infrastructure in the lecture theatre and management of the expensive clickers they use. We improve the ARS by removing the need for specialist infrastructure, by using mobile phones instead of clickers, and by providing a web based interface in the familiar Wikipedia style. Responders usually vote by dialing and this has been configured to be cost free in most cases. The desirability of this approach is shown by the use the demonstration system has had with 21,000 voters voting 92,000 times in 14,000 surveys to date.

Hajj, an annual Muslim pilgrimage, is one of the pillars of Islam and every able Muslim must perform this act at least once in their lifetime. During the pilgrimage, millions of Muslims from all over the world congregate for religious rituals in Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The cases of missing Hajj pilgrims are not uncommon and although several tracking and navigation devices have been introduced, there is still a need for a better solution in overcoming the issue. There are several factors that prevent a widespread use of the system, such as the operational costs, availability of the connections and the use in uncommon platform. Thus, this paper proposes a HajjLocator framework for Hajj Pilgrim tracking based on mobile phone environments as it is reasonably affordable and is extensively used by people. The prototype of HajjLocator, as a system to track and monitor pilgrims while performing Hajj, is also discussed.

Television or TV, including internet TV, is a very attractive service to the public and at the same time mobile devices such as tablet or smartphone with broadband network, as a handy device, is available anywhere and anytime. Unfortunately many TV stations have live streaming services which can only be enjoyed on the website but has a poor quality for mobile devices. This paper proposes a framework to allow mobile devices to receive a live streaming service using client server approach. The mobile devices, as a client, will connect to the server and receive a digital broadcasts including decode and display the schedule of events in real time mode, as proof of concept, in the Android platform. This paper shows that users can access live streaming and display images in a good quality through their mobile. Moreover, users are capable to select the required date to get real time schedule of TV events on Android smartphone.

The main aim of 3D mobile interactive navigation support is to offer end-users easier means of accomplishing basic and complex navigation tasks in a user friendly way. Unfortunately, not until the end-users make use of the end-product or prototype, their needs, preferences, and their true understanding will not be acknowledged. As a result of these considerations, this paper presents a qualitative interview study to explore the end-users preferences for 3D mobile interactive navigation system, so as to determine design preferences of the application. The study uses a prototype of the design and conducted photo-diary method interviews, where the prototype visual representations is presented to the prospective end-user in support of an interview, which makes the interview more concrete. The result of the study provided clues about the features that were not foreseen in the earlier design process, the features that need to be upgrade and the features that end-users value most.

Survnvote is a free Audience Response System (ARS) for surveys and voting using the web, sms and mobile devices (PDA or smart phone). This paper proposed some improved features of a web-based ARS which replace the clicker with mobile phone and use the web instead of specialist software and infrastructure. Survnvote solved the main problem of traditional ARS which is high cost and need to physically install the receivers in the room. This system offers a more user friendly approach and improved features, e.g. the introduction of crowd management, Survnvote panel that is easy to use, crowd group voting, and several ways to participate in voting. This system gives a better result representation by providing several data formats such as graph, PowerPoint, Excel. Survnvote also provides data analysis to the user. ARS users will experience valuable services by utilizing this system to support interactivity in their classrooms, seminars and conferences. A test-case of the use of this system in a lecture class is provided in this paper.

Since 2005, when it was introduced to the markets, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology has been used in various applications with the aim to increase convenience in peoples everyday life activities. This technology supports the concept of Ambient Intelligence to interact seamlessly with the computer using everyday-objects to deliver information to the users. Users will not need to concentrate on how to use the computer, but they can focus on the main task that they want to do with the help of the invisible computers which is somehow hidden inside the artifacts. NFC embedded artifacts have enabled this concept into reality. This paper discusses its use in smart posters to deliver rich information to the users in a pleasant, convenient, and easy way.

Purpose – Prediction accuracies are usually affected by the techniques and devices used as well as the algorithms applied. This work aims to attempt to further devise a better positioning accuracy based on location fingerprinting taking advantage of two important mobile fingerprints, namely signal strength (SS) and signal quality (SQ) and subsequently building a model based on extreme learning machine (ELM), a new learning algorithm for single‐hidden‐layer neural networks.Design/methodology/approach – Prediction approach to location determination based on historical data has attracted a lot of attention in recent studies, the reason being that it offers the convenience of using previously accumulated location data to subsequently determine locations using predictive algorithms. There have been various approaches to location positioning to further improve mobile user location determination accuracy. This work examines the location determination techniques by attempting to determine the location of mobile u...

One of the emerging researches in ubiquitous computing area is smart home environment. Smart Home environment is designed to provide the user with minimal interaction towards home appliances such as fan control, light, security monitoring temperature monitoring and wireless electrical switches. However, the communication between base station (central hub) with remote device (smart phone) can easily be breached if no security measuresare taken. In this paper, we propose a security model consisting of AES256, Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman key exchange and RC4-based hash function to secure the authentication and message integrity between central hub and remote device.
