Mevlüt Gül; Vecdi Demircan; Hasan Yilmaz; Hilal Yilmaz

This study estimates the technical efficiency of goat rearing in the province of Isparta in Turkey using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The data used were collected from 92 goat farmers using the stratified sampling method by means of a questionnaire. The technical efficiency of the goat farming varied widely between 0.13 and 1.00. The mean efficiency of 92 goat farms was calculated to be 0.44 and 0.66 for constant and variable returns to scale assumptions, respectively. The greatest slacks were in feedstuff concentrates and labour used. The most significant factors affecting efficiency of goat production were farmer experience, cooperative membership, milk yield per goat, and family and hired labour. Technical efficiency should be improved by providing farmers with well-organised education, an extension program, and research and development programs on goat rearing.

Economic and social structures of water buffalo farming in Muş province of Turkey

Mehmet Işik; Mevlüt Gül

The purpose of this study was to analyse the socio-economic structure of water buffalo farming in the province of Mus, in Turkey. The stratified sampling method was used to calculate sample size of buffalo farms in the Central, Korkut, and Haskoy districts of Mus province, where buffalo farming is widespread. Data were collected from the 94 farms by surveys in the 2013 production period. A single budget analysis method was used to calculate production cost and profit for water buffaloes. Plant production constituted 37.85% of the gross production value, while animal production accounted for 62.15%. The biggest share in the gross production value derived from water buffalo farming (45.71%). Fixed and variable costs were 51.44% and 48.56% of the production cost (USD11691.06), respectively. The largest part of the variable cost was the feed cost (75.81%). The cost of per kilogram buffalo milk in the region was calculated as USD0.64. Consequently, it is important to ensure the continuation of breeding studies to increase milk yield, giving information to farmers about modern techniques, developing policies to increase the scale of the farms, and implementing regional and national policies to increase awareness of buffalo milk and milk products.

Vecdi Demircan; Hasan Yilmaz; Mevlüt Gül; Hayati Koknaroglu

In this study, different goat farms in Isparta province, which have considerable importance in goat farming in Turkey, were compared in terms of performance, production cost and profitability and the most profitable farm size was determined. Data were obtained by conducting a questionnaire with 92 goat farms selected by stratified random sampling method. Goat farms were divided into three groups according to their size and were then analysed. Accordingly farms were assigned as Group I (1–100 goats, 34 farms), Group II (101–300 goats, 26 farms) and Group III (>300 goats, 17 farms). It was found that small farms had higher lactation milk yield (kg/goat) and concentrate consumption (P 0.05).

Vecdi Demircan; Hasan Yilmaz; Z Dernek; Tufan Bal; Mevlüt Gül; H Koknaroglu

This study determined the economic effects of avian influenza on the egg-production sector of Afyon Province, Turkey. Economic indicators were compared before and during the avian influenza outbreak. A questionnaire was conducted with 75 poultry farmers. Farms were divided into three groups according to their size. The profitability of the three farm size groups was compared during two study periods: before and during the avian influenza outbreak. The results indicate that, as compared to previous levels, farms experienced significantly reduced incomes during the avian influenza episode. While net income and profit margin were found to be negative in all three farm groups during the avian influenza period, only group I showed economic loss prior to avian influenza. Average net income per group was -19,576.14, -39,810.11, and -112,035.33 YTL respectively during the avian influenza outbreak, compared with prior incomes of -5,665.51, 8,422.92, and 16,3873.71 YTL (1 USD=1.43 YTL). The profit margin per egg during avian influenza was -0.029, -0.016, -0.010 YTL in group I, II, III, respectively, as compared to -0.007, 0.003, and 0.014 YTL/egg before avian influenza. It was found that, whereas larger farms were more profitable than small farms prior to the avian influenza period, larger farms suffered greater economic losses than small farms during avian influenza outbreak in the participating farms.

Major countries in world quince production are Turkey, China, Uzbekistan, Morocco and Iran. Quince production in Turkey increased by 1.60 times compared to the average of 1981-1985. In this increase in the quince production in Turkey, the increase in the per-tree yield has been considerably effective (an increase of 40%). 5.3% of quince fruit produced in the world is exported. World quince exports amount increased 8.32 times and the value increased 38.42 times. The highest share in quince export values is in the Netherlands (33.6%). The Netherlands is followed by Turkey, Austria and Iran respectively. The share of Turkey in the world export value is 31.1%. Russia ranks first in the world quince import with 23.3% share. Austria and Germany are followed by Russia.9.4% of the quince production in Turkey is exported. The major quince producers are Sakarya, Bursa, Antalya, Bilecik and Denizli. The purpose of this study was to calculate costs of milk production, gross production value, gross margin, absolute profit, and relative profit of dairy cattle farms located in the provinces of east Mediterranean region of Turkey. Primary data were collected from 148 dairy cattle farms designated using the Neyman Stratified Sampling method through surveys. Dairy farms were classified into four groups according to the number of cows. The data belong to the 2012 production season. A single product budget analysis method was used for calculating production costs. According to the results, variable costs amounted to 65.91% of total production costs. Feed cost (86.52%) was the main component of variable costs. The cost of 1 kg of milk, on average, was calculated as USD 0.261. The cost of milk was USD 0.499 on group 1 farms, USD 0.399 on group 2 farms, USD 0.272 on group 3 farms, and USD 0.233 on group 4 farms. Among the farms under study, average gross margin value was negative only on group 1 farm, and positive in all other groups. Absolute profit value was positive only on group 4 farm, and negative in all other groups. The average relative profit of the farms was 0.9067. The expansion of dairy farms could be reached by reducing the feed cost as well as increasing the scale of farms.

Mevlüt Gül; Mürşide Çağla Örmeci Kart; Bekir Sitki Sirikci

Abstract Lavender is a perennial shrub cultivated primarily for its inflorescence which produces high value essential oil. In Turkey, a great deal of studies has been done regarding the calculation of input, cost and profit of many agricultural products. However; there are not sufficient studies for medical and aromatic plants. In this study, it was aimed to determine the production inputs, costs and profitability of lavender farms. As research field, Isparta Province, which constitutes significant portion of Turkey’s lavender production, was chosen. The material of this study consists of data obtained through face-to-face surveys with 38 farmers. The mean yield of farm was calculated as 1636.70 kg ha-1 while 1 kg lavender production cost was calculated as
