The role of electrostatics in accumulating dirt on vehicles during painting is examined. Experimental observations of charge buildup due to normal assembly operations are documented along with the effectiveness of using ionized air to minimize the charge. These observations are then interpreted in terms of theoretical models of charge storage and dissipation. Finally, the magnitude of various electrostatic forces that might contribute to dirt attraction are considered, leading to a computer model that predicts a simple criterion for determining when electrostatic effects may be neglected.
