Multilevel (ML) technology increases storage capacity and data transfer rates of an optical data storage system. ML is shown to be a strong candidate for use with a high numeric aperture (NA) and blue-laser system by demonstrating good margin performance.

Multilevel (ML) recording technology doubles the speed and capacity of standard digital versatile disc (DVD) writable and rewritable systems. Implemented with the addition of single chip or core to the standard drive architecture, ML technology doubles performance with no change to the optical mechanical unit. While custom media has been optimized for high speed ML recording, ML recording works well with standard writable and rewritable media.

MultiLevel recording for high-density, blue-laser systems has achieved approximately 5 X 10-5 BER before ECC using growth-dominant phase-change materials on a 0.6mm cover-layer, 405nm-wavelength, 0.65-NA system.
