While digital rights and policy management (DRM/DPM) technologies have matured to become mainstream they are now poised to thrive in all aspects of our daily electronic lives and digital assets. A key issue remains however unsolved with respect to managing exceptions in the context of DRM enabled systems and information assets. This paper addresses this issue defining the problem and proposing a model based on credentials allowing to dynamically account for lawful unanticipated usage situations while still maintaining a given level of persistent protection, governed usage and audit trails.

Networks today are dynamic (e.g. devices join and leave P2P communities or Bluetooth piconets) so programs need to be autonomous. This means that they must be able to continue working despite changes in the network. To provide autonomy, developers require a programming model where the communication primitives are non-blocking, where there is support for information lookup in a programs current network and where network outages are considered natural rather than as errors. This paper presents Lana, a programming model based on Java, that includes concepts for communication, mobility, security and connection recovery in order to support autonomy.

Web portals have a huge importance on todays Internet. Their purpose is to serve as an entry point to information on the Web, by proposing search and classification related services. The usefulness of a Web portal depends directly on the quality of service it offers. This paper presents the SIMAT architecture which exploits a backbone of machines running a secure mobile agent platform to improve quality of service. The agents are programmed to reduce the latency of information retrieval and to support the personalization and security of information search requests.

As enterprise DRM is emerging, the environment in which Digital Rights Management is used becomes highly heterogeneous. Multiple fields, content types, processes, actors and systems are involved. In this context, considering only sector based interoperability is not enough. DRM interoperability should also be considered more globally in order to provide a common ground of understanding and communication base. This paper introduces an approach based on Types to tackle DRM content interoperability. A DRM First Class Citizen can enable easy handling of rights enabled content as well as their integration into existing Information Systems independently of the content to be protected.
