Human values and social identities: A study in two collectivist cultures

Valdiney V. Gouveia; Francisco José Batista de Albuquerque; Miguel Clemente; Pablo Espinosa

The current study examines the value correlates of social identities (identification with in-groups and geospatial units) in two collectivist cultures (Brazil, n = 471; Spain, n = 476). According to previous research, it was expected that subjects who score higher on social values would be more identified with the various traditional in-groups and with the local geospatial units and that social identities would be predicted by different values among Brazilians and Spaniards. Subjects were undergraduate students (228 males; 719 females), with age ranging from 16 to 55 years (M = 21.9; SD = 4.57), from three states in Brazil (Paraiba, Distrito Federal, and Sao Paulo) and Spain (Pontevedra, Madrid, and Barcelona). They were administered the Individualism-Collectivism Questionnaire, the Basic Value Survey, the In-group Identification Scale, the Geospatial Identification Scale, and a questionnaire with demographic questions (e.g., gender, age, religious affiliation). Results confirm that importance attributed t...

Personal determinants of burnout in nursing staff at geriatric centers

Manuel Gandoy-Crego; Miguel Clemente; Jose Manuel Mayán-Santos; Pablo Espinosa

There is a high prevalence of stress in the workplace among nursing personnel at elderly care-centers. The general impression is that these high stress levels are related to conflict within the workplace. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether personal factors (in particular personality and values), are related to burnout. For this reason we asked a sample of 42 nursing personnel from care-centers for the elderly to complete a self-administered questionnaire on conflict at work, stress at work, personality and motivational values for nursing professionals in elderly residences. Personality variables and motivational values were found to be significantly related to the appearance of stress in the workplace.

El cuestionario de valores de Schwartz (CVS): propuesta de adaptación en el formato de respuesta

Valdiney V. Gouveia; Miguel Clemente; Miguel Angel Vidal

When courts accept what science rejects: Custody issues concerning the alleged “parental alienation syndrome”

Miguel Clemente; Dolores Padilla-Racero

ABSTRACT “Parental alienation syndrome” (PAS) is unscientific and is an affront to children, women who hold the custody of children of separated couples, science, human rights, and the justice system itself. Justice, to be just, should be based on scientifically proven theories and evidence. This article describes investigations carried out to show that two of the principles that underpin PAS are false: That children lie when pressed (alienated in the terminology of PAS), and that the principle that should guide judges’ actions for the good of the child should be that for the child to always be in contact with both parents. The results of these investigations show that these two principles are false and advocates the use of truly scientific proceedings for judges to grant custody in case of dispute between parents, as well as for determining the visitation for the noncustodial parent.

Judicial Decision-Making in Family Law Proceedings

Miguel Clemente; Dolores Padilla-Racero; Manuel Gandoy-Crego; Adela Reig-Botella; Rubén González-Rodríguez

Judicial Family Law proceedings are peculiar; a large number of cases are never closed, until the children reach adulthood. We selected three variables to test whether they can explain the credibility of each party and agent in the proceedings: guiding principle that orients the courts decision, confirmation of maternal manipulation in the psycho-social report, and establishing credibility of the childs testimony. An incidental sample of 169 people was used. The three manipulated variables imply very different levels of credibility for each party to the proceedings. Finally, proposed modifications to court proceedings are suggested to ensure adequate protection of children.

La medida del comportamiento antisocial en adolescentes y jóvenes: desarrollo del Inventario de Comportamientos Antisociales (ICA)

Pablo Espinosa; Miguel Clemente

Ethical Issues in Psychologists' Professional Practice: Agreement Over Problematic Professional Behaviors Among Spanish Psychologists

Miguel Clemente; Pablo Espinosa; Javier Urra

A sample of 703 Spanish psychologists completed an online survey containing 114 behaviors related to professional practice in different areas. The aim of the study was to learn which professional behaviors create ethical dilemmas most often for psychologists and how they respond to these issues. Findings suggest that psychologists who have actually faced a particular dilemma are less strict on judging the inappropriateness of a possible ethical transgression than those psychologists who have not experienced it. Also, four clusters can be identified according to the attitude of respondents toward the dilemmas, namely “rejection,” “aprioristic,” “utilitarian,” and “no conflict.”

Alterations in psychosocial health of people affected by asbestos poisoning

Miguel Clemente; Adela Reig-Botella; Juan Carlos Prados

OBJECTIVE To analyze the state of psychosocial and mental health of professionals affected by asbestos. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 110 professionals working in the Ferrolterra region of Spain, who were affected by asbestos poisoning. This group was compared with a group of 70 shipyard workers with no manifestation of work-related diseases. All the participants were male with a mean age of 67 years. This study was conducted in 2013, between January and June, and used the SCL-90 questionnaire by Derogatis as its primary measure for research. This questionnaire consists of 9 variables that measure psychosomatic symptoms. In addition, an overall index of psychosomatic gravity was calculated. The participants were also asked two questions concerning their overall perception of feeling good. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and logistic regression. RESULTS Participants affected by asbestos poisoning showed high occurrence rates of psychological health variables such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism, and global severity index. CONCLUSIONS Social interaction as a differentiating factor between workers affected by work-related chronic syndromes as compared to healthy participants will possibly aid in the development of intervention programs by improving the social network of affected individuals.

The Occupational Health of Correctional Officers in Peru The Impact of Length of Work Experience

Miguel Clemente; Adela Reig-Botella; Raúl Coloma

Correctional facility staff are subject to an organizational environment that often causes health problems. This article explores variation in correctional officers’ psychosocial health, including assessments of burnout syndrome, job satisfaction, work–family life harmony, role ambiguity, and role conflict. In all, 536 Peruvian correctional officers, 10% of the nation’s correctional employees, were administered psychological tests to measure the aforementioned variables and the impact of a length of work experience variable. Findings confirm a relationship between occupational health and length of work experience. The article offers future directions for research and suggested programs to promote corrections officer health.
