Comparison of different advanced oxidation processes for phenol degradation.

Santiago Esplugas; Jaime Giménez; Sandra Contreras; E. Pascual; Miguel Rodrı́guez

Advanced Oxidation Processes (O3, O3/H2O2, UV, UV/O3, UV/H2O2, O3/UV/H2O2, Fe2+ /H2O2 and photocatalysis) for degradation of phenol in aqueous solution have been studied in earlier works. In this paper, a comparison of these techniques is undertaken: pH influence, kinetic constants, stoichiometric coefficient and optimum oxidant/pollutant ratio. Of the tested processes, Fenton reagent was found to the fastest one for phenol degradation. However, lower costs were obtained with ozonation. In the ozone combinations, the best results were achieved with single ozonation. As for the UV processes, UV/H2O2 showed the highest degradation rate.

Photo-Fenton treatment of a biorecalcitrant wastewater generated in textile activities: biodegradability of the photo-treated solution

Miguel Rodrı́guez; Victor Sarria; Santiago Esplugas; Cesar Pulgarin

Photo-Fenton process was explored as photochemical pre-treatment to improve the biodegradability of a wastewater coming from a textile industry located in the south of France, which was characterized as very biorecalcitrant by means of Zahn–Wellens biodegradability test. The effect of H2O2, Fe(III) and temperature on the photo-mineralization processes have been studied and the optimal conditions were found. Experiments were made to obtain information concerning the evolution of the biodegradability of the treated effluent after 40 and 70% of photo-mineralization. The photo-treated effluent is not biocompatible and its complete mineralization cannot be performed by biological means. UV–VIS and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses show that aromatic intermediates remain in the effluent after the photo-treatment, which have been identified as the principal reason of the biorecalcitrance.

Influence of H2O2 and Fe(III) in the photodegradation of nitrobenzene

Miguel Rodrı́guez; Andreas Kirchner; Sandra Contreras; Esther Chamarro; Santiago Esplugas

Abstract The influence of H 2 O 2 and Fe(III) in the degradation of nitrobenzene in aqueous solutions combined with UV radiation has been studied. A major efficiency is achieved when UV is combined with H 2 O 2 or Fe(III). Likewise, H 2 O 2 and Fe(III) concentration has an important effect on the degradation. Nitrophenol isomers are detected as the major intermediate products.

Justicia y sociedad en la Cataluña de los Austrias: magistrados y linajes nobiliarios

Miguel Rodrı́guez

This article tries to establish the main features of the judicial system in Catalonia during the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. It represents a serious attempt of including the main items which affected the everyday life of Catalan jurists before the arrival of the Nova Planta Decree. Till now we have studied more or less each item but we needed to put all these data together. A difficult task which has been carried out, for the first time, in this study. Their social origins, professional experience and cultural incidence in the Catalan society are perhaps the main features of this article. Reshaping our knowledge is never easy but it casts new light on aspects which have been studied before without this general outlook.

APRENDIENDO A LEER COMPRENSIVAMENTE CON EL ORDENADOR. 2. EL ORDENADOR EN EL TRABAJO POR ÁREAS CURRICULARES: ENSEÑANZA POR DESCUBRIMIENTO*

Carles Monereo; Inma Pericas; Miguel Rodrı́guez
