Lighting system design using green energy from living plants

Ming Foong Lee; M.N.N. Mohd Zain; Chee Sern Lai

Green energy is the energy generated from nature such as water, wind, solar and wave that aimed to reduce environmental damage or destruction, sustain the use of energy and natural resources as well as promote the use of renewable energy. This study aimed to analyse the electrical energy generated by the three types of living plants selected at the parking area of the Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education and design a lighting system for the parking area by using living plants as the source of energy generation. This study consisted two phases, Phase I: Analysing the energy generated from the living plants; and Phase II: designing the lighting system for the parking area phase using living plants. The result of the analysis of the energy produced by living plants showed that the selected living plants are able to produce energy with the sufficient amount needed by the lighting system at the parking area. Based on the analysis of the generation of energy from living plants, the lighting system was designed by using step-up circuit and the charging circuit. In conclusion, living plants should be fully utilized as part of the energy resources to generate energy.

Green Practice Knowledge Profiling among the Technical and Vocational Education Masters Programme Students

Ming Foong Lee; N.S. Muhtar; Chee Sern Lai

Global warming is utmost problem because of the negative impact to all creatures of the earth. The best solution for this issue should through education. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the green practice knowledge among the Technical and Vocational Education Masters’ students in Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. Green practice knowledge refer to National Green Technology Policy four key areas by KeTTHA which is energy sector, building sector, water and waste water management sector, and transportation sector. A total numbers of 87 students were selected as respondent using stratified sampling technique in this study. A survey method using questionnaire was employed as research design for this study. The gathered data were analyse using sum, mean score, standard deviation, Kruskall Wallis test and Mann Whitney U test. The findings found that the level of green practice knowledge was at the medium level. The findings also shown that there was no significant in the level of green practice knowledge from the aspect of gender and background of study among the respondents. However, there was a significant difference in green practice knowledge among the respondents in terms of age. As a conclusion, the global warming impact can be minimize by increasing the green knowledge, awareness and practising among the communities in their lifestyle.

Identifying mental health elements among technical university students using fuzzy Delphi method

P.K. Pua; Chee Sern Lai; Ming Foong Lee

Mental health is a part of our daily life that is often experienced. As a student, mental health issue often encounters a variety of difficult challenges at the higher education institution. A student with good mental health can handle and cope the normal stress of life, capable work productivity, enhance academic performance and able to make contribute to the community. However, rapidly transformation and changing of society have been impacted on students’ mental health, and it will be deteriorated and negatively impact on students if it absence of preventive controlled. This study aimed to identify the element of mental health among the technical university students. A total of 11 experts were selected to analyze the fuzziness consensus of experts. All collected data was analysed by using the fuzzy Delphi method. The result shows that there are 4 elements of 8 elements that fulfil the requirement consensus of experts, which threshold value is equal and less than 0.2, the percentage of the expert group is more than 75%. The four elements were depression, anxiety, stress, and fear are often experienced by technical university students. In conclusion, precocious actions have to be taken by university and counselling centre, parents and non-government organization in order to mitigate the mental health problem faced by students to improve the quality lifestyle of university student.

A case study on energy saving through lighting system for building: An internal energy review

Ming Foong Lee; N. Q. Zulkafli

The dramatic increase use of electricity each year in Malaysia requires the government to take the initiative on the aspect of energy efficiency in order to address the environmental issues involving climate change and the issue of energy consumption through the application of green technology. One of them is by ensuring the use of electricity more efficient and minimizing wastage of energy consumption. Implementation of energy management in lighting system is one of the common practice. This paper presents an evaluation on efficiency in energy consumption for the lighting system in the selected area in the building of Faculty of Technical & Vocational Education (FPTV), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and propose a lighting design which compliance to MS 1525:2014 as strategic plan to achieve the optimum use of energy. Also, the return on investment (ROI) according to the choice of lamp type was analyze to determine how much energy is being saved. The lamp type with energy efficient and environmentally friendly chosen in this case study was the LED. Analysis of the data showed that the used of LED lights are able to provide energy saving of 30%–80% compared to ordinary bulbs. Hence, this strategy is strongly recommended in order to minimize the electricity usage.
