This article addresses food insecurity among urban Brazilian families with children under seven years. A cross-sectional study in areas covered by primary health care centers identified 5,419 families in the Northeast and 5,081 in the South of the country. Food insecurity was assessed by the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity was 22.9% in the Northeast and 7.5% in the South. According to the adjusted analysis, increased likelihood of moderate or severe food insecurity was associated with families headed by women, black or brown maternal skin color, low maternal education, low family income, and enrollment in the Bolsa Família program (conditional income transfer). Moderate or severe food insecurity would be reduced by 59.5% in the Northeast and 45.4% in the South with a per capita income of at least BRL 175.00 per month. Increased family income for the poorest families and better targeting of Bolsa Família are essential for reducing food insecurity in the country.

Objectives: to identify the factors associated with musculo-skeletal pain (MSP) in schoolchildren in municipal public schools in the city of Rio Grande, in the far south of Brazil, between June and December 2010. Methods: a sectional study was carried out with a random sample of 625 schoolchildren aged between six and eighteen years of age. MSP was investigated using the Nordic Osteomuscular Symptoms Questionnaire (NOSQ) and information relating to demographic and biological factors, the means of transport of school materials and lifestyle, obtained using a standardized questionnaire. The raw and adjusted prevalence rations for association between MSP and the factors under study were estimated using a Poisson regression model. Results: the prevalence of MSP was 37.6%. Being aged between 11 and 18 years (PR=1.70; CI95%=1.36-2.11; p<0.001), being female (PR=1.47; CI95%=1.19-1.81; p<0.001) and a family history of back pain (PR=0.78; CI95%=0.64-0.96; p=0.020) were associated with the outcome. Not practicing competitive sports was a protective factor (PR=0.65; CI95%=0.51-0.81; p<0.001). Conclusions: these results confirm the negative influence of various factors present in the school environment on the health of students. It is considered an important measure to introduce health promotion programs in schools to encourage students to adopt healthy practices that minimize the deleterious effects of MSP.

INTRODUCTION A healthy diet is recognized as an important strategy for promoting health as an essential part of non-pharmacological therapy of various health problems. OBJECTIVE To analyze the reported advice for the intake of salt, sugar and fat for the Brazilian adults living in urban areas. METHODOLOGY National-based cross-sectional study with 12,402 adults interviewed in 100 Brazilian cities. RESULTS The most prevalent advice was to low fat intake (38%), followed by the advice to low salt and sugar intake (36%) and sugar (29%). The percentage of receiving different advice was similar and more common among women, older people, those with a partner, higher economic class, former smokers, active and in person with physician diagnoses of hypertension, diabetes and overweight. People with white skin color received more advice to eat healthy food, except for the orientation to low salt intake. CONCLUSION The results show a low prevalence of advice, which configures a missed opportunity to prevent health problems. Although dietary counseling should not be understood only as the transmission of advice regarding some nutrients, it is important to develop actions in order to qualify services and health professionals, allowing the population to have access to qualified information about the benefits of having healthy lifestyles.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the prevalence and characteristics of health service use by adolescents in the urban area of Pelotas-RS, Brazil. METHODS: a population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 743 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years; the outcome was health service use in the thirty days preceding the interview. RESULTS: of the total sample, 23.0% (95%CI: 19.4;26.6) used health services; of these, 38% used private or health plan services and 32.2% used public health services; the SUS financed more than half (52.1%) of care; the main reasons for health service use was health problems (69.0%) and follow-up appointments (18.7%); the reasons for choosing the service were nearness to home (23.4%), preference for commonly used services (22.8%) and choice made by parents or guardians (21.1%). Mirelle de Oliveira Saes; Cristina Dutra Ribeiro; Ana Luisa Muccillo-Baisch; Maria Cristina Flores Soares

Doi: 10.5902/2179769210013 Aims: describe the composition of the teams of the Center of Psychosocial Attention (CAPS), according to sociodemographic characteristics, work, training and professional qualification and thus contribute to the evaluation of the public investment in the management of work and continuing education. Methods: it is a cross-sectional study integrated to the research “Evaluation of CAPS in southern Brazil”. Results: the majority of the workers were women (78%), with higher education, with an average workload of 30 hours weekly, with a single job. About 30% had poor working relationship. We found a low percentage of doctors (62%) and nurses (26%) specializing in mental health and quantitative deficiency of midlevel and technical professionals in the health teams (53%). Conclusions: we emphasize the importance of adequate training of the teams and the need to fight precarious work. The results suggest a gap to be filled into what is advocated for the CAPS’s workforce composition.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence of back pain and associated factors in children attending public schools from South Brazil. METHODS A cross-sectional study, conducted between May-July 2014, where a random sample of 619 adolescents, aged 10-17 years of age, was evaluated. The prevalence of back pain was assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, and the independent variables (demographic and biological information, the way of transporting school supplies, and pain during and after the walk) were obtained through a standardized questionnaire. The Poisson regression model was used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted prevalence of back pain in association with the factors investigated. RESULTS The prevalence of back pain was 45.2 %, out of which 64.6 % reported pain in one region, 27.1 % in two and 8.3 % in the three regions investigated. After an individual assessment of regions, it was found that the highest prevalence of pain relates to the dorsal region (26.2 %). The most relevant associated factors include female gender (OR=1.43, 95 %CI 1.19-1.74; p<0.01), age between 14 and 17 (OR=1.22; 95 %CI = 1.03-1.45; p=0.02), and dark skin (OR=1.20, 95 %CI 1.01-1.43; p=0.04). CONCLUSION The results highlight the need for greater attention to adolescents complaining of back pain, in order to prevent the presence of this chronical disorder in adolescence and later in adulthood. Therefore, it is necessary to educate adolescents and their guardians for the stimulation and consequent adoption of healthy practices for musculoskeletal integrity.
