Sulfahri; Mohamad Amin; Sutiman Bambang Sumitro; Murni Saptasari

ABSTRACT Algae Spirogyra have the potential to be developed as a raw material for bioethanol production. This study aims to determine the effect of the hydrolysis process of algae Spirogyra on total sugar production. The hydrolysis process of Spirogyra hyalina was carried out using a variation of heating duration and type of enzyme. This study also aimed to determine the effect of fermentation duration and the addition of nutritional fermentation on the reducing sugar, pH changes, microbial biomass and ethanol production from algae Spirogyra hyalina by using Zymomonas mobilis. The fermentation process was carried out in anaerobic conditions using a modified fermentor for 96 hours. Results showed the differences the hydrolysis process of algae Spirogyra hyalina affected on sugar levels. The highest sugar level was achieved by a combination of α-amylase and β-amylase enzymes. Fermentation duration and nutritional fermentation affected reducing sugar, pH substrate, microbial biomass and ethanol levels produced from the fermentation of algae Spirogyra by using Zymomonas mobilis.

Active compounds with antioxidant potential in boiled local Papua-Indonesian garlic

Balqis; Widodo; Betty Lukiati; Mohamad Amin

Garlic is a cultivated plant that has benefits as a cooking and medicinal spice. Garlic can be consumed fresh or in a processed state. As a cooking spice, garlic is generally boiled or heated. Garlic processing can damage the content of its active compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the contents of garlic from the Arfak-Papua Mountains with potential as antioxidants after garlic was processed by boiling. The chemical content of garlic from Papua was determined by Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS). The results of determination by LCMS obtained 78 kinds of active compounds. Based on similarity with PubChem NCBI data base, 77 active compounds were identified. Analysis of antioxidants using the PASS Server showed 13 kinds of active compounds with potential as antioxidants belonging to organosulfur compounds, flavonoids, flavonols, phenolics, phytoalexins, terpenoids and vitamins. Among these compounds were allicin, allixin, allithiamine, isoquercitrin and rutin. Based on this re...

The implementation of CIRC learning is expected to increase the academic achievement in biology of pre-service elementary school teachers. Cooperative learning is based on positive interdependency, face to face interaction, individual responsibility, communication between members in group and process evaluation in group. The research aimed to study the influence of CIRC on academic achievement in biology in Course of Basic Concept of Biology for Elementary School. The research was conducted for one semester to all students of Primary School Teacher Education Program in Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pakuan University, Indonesia consisted of 59 students. The research was quasi experiment with randomize factor. Research variables consisted of learning model and academic achievement in biology. Indicators used in academic achievement in biology referred to the cognitive domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy level. Data used was the result of pretest and posttest of academic achievement in biology. Ancova and descriptive data statistic were used as data analysis. Ancova test resulted in significance level of 0.000 less than alpha of 0.05. It can be concluded that CIRC gave better influence on academic achievement in biology compare to conventional learning. It was suggested that lecturer and teacher could implement CIRC to increase biology achievement. Active learning with CIRC is able to make students reconstruct biological material, thus the knowledge could be in long term memory.

This study aims to describe the problem solving ability of students in the subjects of General Biology. Learning model used culture-based prawn shrimp. Subjects in this study are students semester 1 majoring in biology education academic year 2014-2015 Muhammadiyah University of Makassar and the object of research is the ability problem-solving and student responses with a culture-based model of shrimp ponds. Data analysis techniques used are average, percentage and likert scale. The results of this study indicate that based on the average student problem solving ability after using the BTS model is 84.4 with excellent qualification. Recapitulation of student response indicate that from six statement there are dominant statement that strongly agree that statement of BTS teaching model motivate student to work in group, and two dominant statement agree that learning with BTS model can explore ability and train student problem solving. Students agree that learning with BTS model makes students more active and more memorable because in the model of learning BTS students construct knowledge independently. Analysis of requirements for teaching materials based on the course bioinformatics for plant metabolism

Balqis; Widodo; Betty Lukiati; Mohamad Amin

A way to improve the quality of learning in the course of Plant Metabolism in the Department of Biology, State University of Malang, is to develop teaching materials. This research evaluates the needs of bioinformatics-based teaching material in the course Plant Metabolism by the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) development model. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to the students in the Plant Metabolism course of the Department of Biology, University of Malang, and analysis of the plan of lectures semester (RPS). Learning gains of this course show that it is not yet integrated into the field of bioinformatics. All respondents stated that plant metabolism books do not include bioinformatics and fail to explain the metabolism of a chemical compound of a local plant in Indonesia. Respondents thought that bioinformatics can explain examples and metabolism of a secondary metabolite analysis techniques and discuss potential medicinal compounds from local plants. As ...
