Many testing kits for screening common drugs are widely used in Malaysia such as dip strip urine drug testing kit which is specified for detecting drug of abuser. However, currently there is no specific testing kit for screening urine samples to detect glue abusers has been found. This research is dedicated to develop a specific color test method emphasizing the screening for glue abusers, known as G.S. Kit. It contains benzenesulphonyl chloride, pyridine and distilled water. The urine sample is mixed with pyridine and benzenesulphonylchloride and followed by distilled water. A positive result will be in the form of a color reaction from yellow to red. This novel G.S. kit would be quite useful for the screening and detecting of glue sniffing and toluene abuser qualitatively as a way of helping National Anti Drug Agency, Department of Education and Royal Police of Malaysia in preventing glue sniffing from becoming a social pandemic.

In this study, a new composite core-shell of o-cresol molecularly imprinted polymer grafted silica gel (MIP@SiO2) was prepared via sol-gel polymerization. It was synthesized using o-cresol as the template molecule, 3-propyl(metacrylate)trimethoxysilane (3-PMTMOS) as the functional monomer, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as the cross-linker and ethanol as the porogenic solvent in the surface of silica gel. The non-imprinted polymer-grafted silica gel (NIP@SiO2) was prepared with the same technique but without template molecule. This analyte was selected as a template due to the fact that it is one of toluene metabolites. The characterization of MIP@SiO2 and NIP@SiO2 were observed by N2 adsorption analysis and Field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray (FESEM-EDX). The MIP@SiO2 and NIP@SiO2 were employed as an adsorbent for the extraction of o-cresol, a metabolite in urine sample for the monitoring of occupational toluene exposure in workers. Based on the results of the adsorption study, ...
