Most vehicle license plate recognition use neural network techniques to enhance its computing capability. The image of the vehicle license plate is captured and processed to produce a textual output for further processing. This paper reviews image processing and neural network techniques applied at different stages which are preprocessing, filtering, feature extraction, segmentation and recognition in such way to remove the noise of the image, to enhance the image quality and to expedite the computing process by converting the characters in the image into respective text. An exemplar experiment has been done in MATLAB to show the basic process of the image processing especially for license plate in Malaysia case study. An algorithm is adapted into the solution for parking management system. The solution then is implemented as proof of concept to the algorithm.

Vehicle plate number is a unique combination of characters and numbers. Hence, it has been used in various application as personal identification such as for parking system identification, security monitoring system and etc. This paper illustrated the double edge detection technique in order to enhance the vehicle plate image, before character recognition process. Firstly, the vehicle image is captured, and then it will be re-sized and cropped until the resolution of image is 300×300. After the re-sized process, First Edge detection is applied to the image. Threshold of black and white are 59 and 60 respectively used to change the image into black and white colour only. Next, Second Edge detection is used to remove the unwanted image and only remain the plate number in white colour. MATLAB software is used in this experiment.

The use of renewable energy such as solar is nowadays exceptionally used in electrical systems due to increasing on power demand. Thus, power electronic converters are widely used to perform the required energy conversion. However, the device such as multilevel inverter (MLI) is designed without harmonic-less. This phenomenon will create power quality problem such as increases in total harmonic distortion (THD). Moreover, increasing of the nonlinear loads usage also contributed in harmonic problem. This paper presents the single phase shunt active power filter (APF) based on instantaneous power theory. The performance of APF depends on instantaneous power theory control strategies which combined with the cascaded MLI to reduce the THD in load current. It enables to provide compensation of harmonic and reactive power in good performance. Generally, the instantaneous power theory is implemented in three phase APF. However, it can be used in single phase by assuming equal voltage and current and the other two voltages and currents are duplicated with 120° angle shifting that will be used for input of instantaneous power theory. The system is validated through extensive simulation with the aid of MATLAB/SIMULINK Toolbox to analyze the output waveform and THD values of current and voltage. The implementation of shunt APF to MLI, the THD of current can be reduced around 70% to 84%.

Utility monitoring system plays a vital role for consumers in domestic areas to identify their electric power usage, thus creates awareness, motivates and educates consumers about saving power consumption. This paper develops a monitoring system for electric power usage, designed consisting of a digital meter, display unit, microcontroller, auto-generated data-based logging and communication device. The system is in real-time structure which measures the power usage by hourly basis and displays the results in kWh every time in convenient and organized manner. The data-based logging feature enables utility usage information to be recorded in timely basis. An additional feature provided in this system is a notification module that send charges information corresponding to consumer’s utility usage. Consumers are able to be aware of the utility usage with the corresponding charges at real-time basis as well as capable to predict, control and manage their utility usage on daily manner. Eventually this system is beneficial for both parties which are the consumers and the utility provider.

This paper discuss about the development of Proportional and Integral (PI) controller for disc speed by involving the disturbance at the feedback control. The effect of the disturbance to the disc speed system is eliminated by Proportional and Integral (PI) controller. The PI controller is tuned heuristically from the MATLAB/simulink at which integrated with the disc plant. The performance of the disc plant is analyzed in real-time. Based on the analysis in real-time, this paper shows that the performance of the PI controller with disturbance and without disturbance. The result with disturbance shows that the output response quite closes to the result without disturbance even though the overshoot is about 8 percent. By the way, the rise time and settling time of the disc speed with disturbance is reduced for the time less than 0.01 and 0.95 seconds each. From the results with and without disturbance, this paper concludes that the development of PI controller for this speed in simulation give less error about 0.02 compared to the real-time system.

Mohamad Riduwan Nawawi; Chong Shin Horng; Mohd Ruzaini Hashim; Ainain Nur Hanaffi

This paper discusses about the development of output feedback Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and demonstrates that this controller is able to reject disturbance in a nonlinear system. The designed SMC controller works well to ensure system stability and eliminates disturbance in linear and nonlinear dynamics systems. The approach to develop output feedback controller is by implementing High Gain Observer and the output performance from this controller is compared with the output response from the state feedback SMC. Both designed controllers are constructed in simulation by using MATLAB SIMULINK tool. The required gains involve in the designed control laws are tuned heuristically by trial and error approach. The state response results obtained from the simulations are analyzed. Based on the observation and analysis to the results it shows that the output feedback SMC illustrates smooth state response and reduces the effect of disturbance as provided by the state feedback (SMC) without disturbance.
