The Zygophyllaceae occur in arid zones and have been reported to contain, among other compounds, flavonoids and alkaloids. The flavonoids in representatives of three of the seven subfamilies have been studied and their distribution is discussed with respect to their chemosystematic significance. The aglycones identified were kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, herbacetin and herbacetin-8-O-methyl ether. Glycosidic patterns elucidated range from mono- to tri-glycosides, five of which are novel in plants. Alkaloids were also shown to be present, and the importance of those cited in the literature has been surveyed in relation to the chemosystematics of the Zygophyllaceae.

Abstract The flavonoids of Fagonia taeckholmiana and four varieties of F. arabica were investigated. Six flavonoids were identified: isorhamnetin 3-glucoside and 3-rutinoside, herbacetin 8-rutinoside, herbacetin 8-methyl ether-3-rutinoside, 3,7-diglucoside and 3-rutinoside-7-glucoside.

Abstract Thirty-six species belonging to 27 genera of the sub-family Apioideae, family Umbelliferae, were investigated for their leaf and stem flavonoids. Fourteen flavonoid glycosides of the aglycones kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, apigenin and luteolin were identified. Chemosystematic relationships are discussed.

The flavonoids and anthraquinones of eight Rumex species belonging to subgenera Rumex and Acetosa were investigated. The flavonoid profile indicated that the subgenera are characterized by the presence of flavonols in subgenus Rumex and C-glycosides in the subgenus Acetosa.

Abstract Flavonoid glycosides of Egyptian Fagonia species were investigated. Glycosides were found to belong to the aglycones kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, herbacetin and herbacetin 8-methyl ether. As in other members of the Zygophyllaceae, rutinosides form the major glycosylation patterns. Other glycosylation forms include 3-glucosides, 3,7-diglucosides and 3-rhamnogalactosides. The correlation of morphological and chemical characters are discussed in relation to phylogenetic trends within the Fagonia species investigated.

Abstract A total of 20 Cyperus and four Pycreus species were investigated for their flavonoids. Glycosides of apigenin, luteolin, tricin and quercetin were identified. Luteolin 5-0-methyl ether and the aurones, aureusidin and sulphuretin, were found as aglycones. The distribution of flavonoids in the different taxa and their chemosystematic significance is discussed.

Twenty samples of Fagonia mollis and F. tristis of different geographic distribution were investigated for their flavonoids. Kaempherol and isorhamnetin 3-rutinosides were the major flavonoids of F. mollis, while F. tristis contained, in addition, 8-O-methylherbacetin. The flavonoid patterns are discussed in correlation with the geographic distribution of both species.

Abstract The chemistry of members of the family Tribulaceae has been studied. Thirty-two flavonoid glycosides were detected in the 22 taxa examinied and found to be based on the aglycones kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin and tricin. The compounds ranged from mono- to tetraglycosides as well as acylated glycosides. The four genera Tribulus , Tribulopis , Kelleronia and Kallstroemia belonging to the subfamily Tribuloideae were studied together with Sisyndite belonging to the subfamily Neoluederitziodeae. The chemosystematics of the Tribulaceae are discussed in relation to the Zygophyllaceae.

Seven flavonol glycosides were identified from the main taxa of theF. bruguieri complex. Of these, kaempferol 3-rhamno-galactoside, Quercetin 3-rhamnogalactoside and Quercetin 3-galactoside are new records for the genusFagonia L. and theZygophyllaceae s. str. The distribution of these flavonoid glycosides is discussed with respect to the morphology, chemosystematics, and possible phylogeny of the complex and the genus.

Abstract Nineteen Euphorbia species were studied for their flavonoid patterns. Flavonoids identified were kaempferol, quercetin, apigenin and luteolin. Major glycosylation patterns are discussed.
