Mohd Hezri Marzaki; Mazidah Tajjudin; Ramli Adnan; Mohd Hezri Fazalul Rahiman; Mohd Hafiz A. Jalil

This paper present the comparison of different model structure selection of ARX modelling using R2, MDL and AIC criterion. Input signal for the process is pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) and STEP response with a magnitude which vary from 0 to 5 volts. The comparisons have been made by considering the ACF and CCF validation technique. The results have shown that R2 provides superior model performance when model complexity is not considered as the penalty.

This study presents the comparative performance of Model Predictive Controller (MPC) and PID controller in controlling temperature on Small Scale Industry Steam Distillation Pilot Plant (SSISD). PID controller were tune based on two most popular tuning which is Ziegler-Nichols tuning rule and Cohen-Coon tuning rule which denote as PID-ZN and PID-CC respectively. The performances were evaluated based on three criteria such as time constant, settling time and percentage overshoot. The simulation and real-time results revealed that the MPC controller was capable to meet desire transient response specially on providing fast settling time and minimum overshoot compared with PID. The paper contains the simulation and realtime studies of those controllers that applied in at Small Scale Industry Steam Distillation Pilot Plant (SSISD).

Temperature plays a major role in determining the effectiveness of bleaching process. Poor temperature control will degrade the end product quality and this problem can be overcome by engaging a robust temperature control. However, since the nature of bleaching process possess large time delay and unknown dynamic variations or uncertainties, it is inherently difficult to design a good temperature controller and simultaneously maintain the desired transient performance aspect. This paper presents the preliminary study of Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) implementation in temperature control of glycerin bleaching process. Open loop step test data is used to construct the Auto-Regressive with Exogenous Input (ARX) corresponding model. The MRAC approach based on Lyapunov rule was tested and analyzed. Simulation results show that, through proper selection of adaptation gain, MRAC is capable to provide excellent temperature regulating performance and also proficient in sustaining the excellent performance under set point change.

Effect of constrained in model predictive controller for SISO SMISD plant

Mohd Hezri Marzaki; Mohd Hafiz A. Jalil; Mazidah Tajjudin; Mohd Hezri Fazalul Rahiman; Ramli Adnan

This paper focus on performance analysis of Model Predictive Controller (MPC) due to the presence of constraint in its algorithm. The controllers are tested in Small-Medium Industry Steam Distillation Plant (SMISD) for regulating the steam temperature at the desired level. The performance of the controller are evaluated based on percentage overshoot, settling time and rise time. The simulation and real-time outcome indicated that Constrained MPC produced better transient response as compared to Unconstrained MPC.

A discrete model reference adaptive control for temperature tracking in steam distillation process

Nurhani Kasuan; Mohd Hafiz A. Jalil; Mohd Hezri Fazalul Rahiman; Mohd Nasir Taib

This paper demonstrates the performance of Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC) using Lyapunov and MIT schemes applied in steam distillation process in real-time and simulated conditions. The integral limits in MRAC were varied during the experiment. Simulated results shows that low SSE and RMSE were obtained when adaptation gain and integral limit were set to 0.003 and +0.01 respectively. However, in real time control, low SSE and RMSE were obtained when the integral limit was eliminated in MRAC Lyapunov and MRAC MIT control structure.

This paper presents the design of a model reference adaptive control (MRAC) for regulating temperature for glycerin bleaching process. Two well known MRAC designs which are MIT and Lyapunov approach are considered. The model of the system is developed based on Auto-Regressive with Exogenous Input (ARX) model. To prevent MRAC from windup problem and to provide robust performance simple modification has been proposed which by removing the pure integral from the original adaptation laws of MRAC. The simulation results shown that the proposed approach was significantly improved the performance MRAC and provide robust performance in regulating temperature for glycerin bleaching process. The result also shows that there is no significant difference performance between modified MIT MRAC and modified Lyapunov MRAC.

Rafidah Ngadengon; Yahaya Md. Sam; Rohaiza Hamdan; Mohd Hafiz A. Jalil; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir

This paper presents the design approach of Multirate Output Feedback (MROF) based Discrete Integral Sliding Mode Control (DISMC) for system with uncertainties. Firstly, the state representing the MROF has to be identified. The discrete integral sliding surface were selected in order to design the controller. The MROF that used output feedback with two different sampling times which are slow and fast rate is then combined with the DISMC to control the uncertain system. The reachability condition and stability are also considered and presented. Through extensive computer simulation, it shows that the proposed controller’s capable to track the reference input even though uncertainties present in the system. The findings demonstrated that the MROF based DISMC provided better system response as compared to the Discrete Linear Quadratic Regulator (DLQR) and discrete Proportional Integral Derivative (PID).
