Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Zarina Tukiran; Md. Razali Tomari; Ariffin Abdul Mutalib; M. Farhan M. Mohsin; Mohd. Nazrul Effendy Mohd. Idrus

Monitoring laboratory equipment record is important to ensure every item is always in place. Generally, in and out equipment is handled manually by technician by writing down the equipment information, including time and date in equipment circulation form. To automate the process, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the most practical and applicable in real implementation in-line with the nature where most of the systems are made computerized. In this paper, a solution has been provided for the problem encountered in laboratory equipment monitoring system using RFID technology. This project consist four main parts: the tag, tag reader, system development and networking system. The RFID tag is tagged on the laboratory equipment where the tag contains laboratory equipment information and RFID reader is located at the door of each laboratory room. This monitoring system enables the head of laboratory and technician to monitor in-out equipment in actual environment and also increase the efficiency in managing equipment in the laboratory. Benefits of the system include enhancement of the safety of University asset and reduce losses of assets and enhancement of the laboratory inventory control of equipment.

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Ariffin Abdul Mutalib; Mohamad Farhan Mohamad Mohsin

This paper describes an ongoing project for recording examination attendance using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The project is carried out to test in a university, where the system which is named Portable Examination Attendance System (PEAS) is integrated with the existing system for record extraction. The use of RFID technology enables the university management to avoid attendance forms from damages such as tear, lost, and misplaced. This paper describes about the design and development of PEAS in terms of hardware technology and software. In addition, some related works are reviewed and addressed to support this project. As a conclusion, this paper states some future works of this project.

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Nadiah Ahmad; Ariffin Abdul Mutalib; Mohd Farhan Mohd Mohsin

This paper presents the development of smart order system in restaurant. The development of the system is primarily concerned to integrate and provide network system rather than the stand alone system which indicates the use of networking capabilities could provide efficient data communication as well as improved the management in restaurant. The development of the system strictly follows the system development life cycle. Generally, the system can be divided into 2 main components which are hardware design which are not discussed in details here and system development which primarily goals of the paper. The results indicate that the system works fine with the data communication works as planned.

Features detection and matching for visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM)

Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Mohd Rizal Arshad

This paper presents the feature detection method for aerial image. The image captured from the navigation was used to select the best landmarks for localization and mapping in SLAM. A robust visual detection method has contributed to better landmark and data association selection. Therefore, different feature detection algorithms were compared to evaluate the best landmark detector and descriptor for the VSLAM. The performances of the feature detectors were evaluated using dataset provided by the Robotics Research Group at University of Oxford. The local images of matching effect on the detector and descriptor have proved the correctness of key point matching. The selected method has been validated and proven efficient for the VSLAM.

Localizing Pipe inspection robot using visual odometry

Hamed Habibi Aghdam; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Mohd Rizal Arshad; Munir Zaman

There is a special type of concrete pipe beneath the roads in Malaysia which is called culvert. Detecting the place of damages in these pipes is important for maintenance operations. Pipe inspection robots are one of the most reliable ways to achieve this goal. Because of the wheel slippage, low speed motion and dynamic changes in kinematic of the robot, the INS and wheel encoder methods are not accurate enough for localizing the robot inside a culvert. In this paper, we propose a solution based on monocular visual odometry. We show that although the surface of the culvert is not flat, nevertheless, by selecting an appropriate camera the optical flow of the pixels inside a small area near the center of the image is almost equal and for this reason the 3D motion of the robot can be estimated using the derivative of camera parameters. The experimental result shows this method is reliable and can be successfully used for localizing the robot inside the culverts.

The development of unmanned small-size double hull blimp for low altitude surveillance system

Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Mohd Rizal Arshad

This paper presents the development of unmanned double hull blimp for low altitude surveillance system. In this proposed design, it offers simpler construction for smaller units however may be difficult to control in turbulences. Studies on the design were employed to find the setup based on the payload limitation based on small-size prototype which to use for the applications; such as communication hub, station keeping and monitoring activities. The experimental results show that the blimp design were able to lift the desired payload and performed the desired navigation‥

Improved simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms for aerial vehicle under dynamic sea surface environment

Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Mohd Rizal Arshad

The aim of this work is to design a SLAM algorithm for localization and mapping of aerial platform for ocean observation. The aim is to determine the direction of travel, given that the aerial platform flies over the water surface and in an environment with few static features and dynamic background. This approach is inspired by the bird techniques which use landmarks as navigation direction. In this case, the blimp is chosen as the platform, therefore the payload is the most important concern in the design so that the desired lift can be achieved. The results show the improved SLAM is were able to achieve the desired waypoint.

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Ahmad Al' Hafiz Riman; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Rahmat Sanudin; Ayob Johari; Roslina Mohd Sidek; Noraziah Ahmad

This paper presents the design and development of Electronic pigeon hole integrated with GSM network to send a notification of any upcoming loaded. The electronic pigeon hole is able to send notification message via short message service (SMS) to the designated user if any new letter is placed in it. The innovation of the electronic pigeon hole could give immediate response for any urgent request for busy people. The system was developed by integrating a detection circuit to acknowledge the existing of new post items with the GSM modem to transmit SMS to specific user. It is found that the developed system is able to provide immediate notifications to intended users for further action.

Multirate output feedback based discrete integral sliding mode control for system with uncertainties

Rafidah Ngadengon; Yahaya Md. Sam; Rohaiza Hamdan; Mohd Hafiz A. Jalil; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir

This paper presents the design approach of Multirate Output Feedback (MROF) based Discrete Integral Sliding Mode Control (DISMC) for system with uncertainties. Firstly, the state representing the MROF has to be identified. The discrete integral sliding surface were selected in order to design the controller. The MROF that used output feedback with two different sampling times which are slow and fast rate is then combined with the DISMC to control the uncertain system. The reachability condition and stability are also considered and presented. Through extensive computer simulation, it shows that the proposed controller’s capable to track the reference input even though uncertainties present in the system. The findings demonstrated that the MROF based DISMC provided better system response as compared to the Discrete Linear Quadratic Regulator (DLQR) and discrete Proportional Integral Derivative (PID).

Decentralized Cooperative Communication Framework for Heterogeneous Multi Agent System

Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Mohd Rizal Arshad

This paper examines the cooperative communication of multiple agents with no parent-child relation or hierarchy. In this communication framework, the multi agent communication must not be affected by the communication network failure between robots. Under this condition, a new communication framework was proposed which has allowed each agent to share the local information with reliable data delivery using peer to peer networking schemes. In this work, the whale communication call and echolocation concept were applied. The experimental results validated the communication reliability and performance. 
