Placement of Road Side Units for floating car data collection in highway scenario

Maryam Rashidi; Iulian Batros; Tatiana Kozlova Madsen; Muhammad Tahir Riaz; Thomas Paulin

Floating car data (FCD) has been used to collect traffic state information from a set of individual vehicles. Vehicles are equipped with On Board Units (OBU) that collect different measurements and the vehicle position and transmit the data to a remote control center. In current implementations of FCD systems, vehicle fleets use cellular connections for data transmission. In this paper we consider an IEEE 802.11p-based Road Side Unit (RSU) infrastructure for FCD collection. Installing RSUs in order to acquire perfect coverage may prove to be a costly solution, while gaps between the coverage areas will force data buffering at OBUs. This might be a viable solution for delay-tolerant, but not for safety-critical applications that require high data delivery ratio. The goal of this paper is to study the trade-offs between the size of the gaps between RSUs and other system parameters such as data delivery ratio, data collection update interval and size of measured data. We have proposed some heuristics that can be used while deciding on the distance between neighboring RSUs.

Combining wired and wireless networks for a QoS-aware broadband infrastructure

Jens Myrup Pedersen; Muhammad Tahir Riaz; Thomas Phillip Knudsen; Ole Brun Madsen

We show how integrated planning of wired and wireless infrastructures can be used to build a QoS-aware broadband infrastructure. The outset is a case study of the municipality of Hals, a rural community in Denmark, where the objective is to establish a broadband infrastructure reaching all households and businesses. Two factors are considered particularly important when designing an infrastructure: the chosen technology must allow for sufficient bandwidth, and the physical network structures must allow for independent paths between any pair of nodes. A final solution is obtained by using fiber to the home for primary connections and fixed wireless access for backup. This is implemented over 15 years, during which temporary solutions ensure sufficient QoS and reliability for all users. These temporary solutions form parts of the final solutions.

On Backbone Structure For a Future Multipurpose Network

Jose Manuel Guterrez Lopez Lopez; Ruben Cuevas Rumin; Muhammad Tahir Riaz; Jens Myrup Pedersen; Ole Brun Madsen

Telecommunications are evolving towards the unification of services and infrastructures. This unification must be achieved at the highest hierarchical level for a complete synergy of services. Therefore, one of the requirements is a multipurpose backbone network capable of supporting all the current and future services over the same infrastructure, offering high QoS levels. This paper analyzes different possibilities of a future backbone in order to find the best option among the studied ones. This option is a two level structure formed by the combination of N2R and Grid topologies which will achieve high performance levels.
