The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the simple calculated osteoporosis risk estimation (SCORE) in a random sample of postmenopausal women. We collected data on 177 consecutive patients aged over 45xa0years. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements were taken at the hip and lumbar spine. The test performance cut-off value was evaluated according to scores of 5, 6, 7, 8 and age distribution. When all groups were evaluated, SCORE 6 sensitivity (Sn), specificity (Sp), positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were 86.7, 59.1, 63, 82.5%, respectively. In the age ranged 45–49, we determined SCORE 6 results of Sn 85, Sp 100%. The test was able to identify women not requiring detailed densitometric investigation in this age group to a high level of accuracy. At SCORE 6 receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.6. We determined that the SCORE questionnaire performance in estimating those women with low BMD in the Turkish population was limited. However, since it is a simple, economical and practical pre-test, a SCORE 6 cut-off value can be used together with the physician’s clinical analysis in sending patients with suspected low BMD for dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) measurement.

This study aimed to analyze prospective elementary mathematics teachers’ opinions about how often teacher training programs provide opportunities for learning how to teach to diverse groups of students. The study employed survey method. The sample used consists of 1386 prospective elementary mathematics teachers in their last year of training at 21 state universities in twelve regions of Turkey. One-Way ANOVA test was applied to reveal how prospective teachers’ responses about the opportunities they had for learning how to teach to diverse students vary among regions with different levels of development. The study found that the prospective teachers in Turkey ‘sometimes’ get the opportunity to learn about teaching to diverse groups of students. ANOVA analysis revealed that the prospective teachers’ opinions about learning to teach to diverse groups of students vary significantly between different regions of Turkey. In other words, the universities in Turkey cannot be characterized as homogenous in terms of learning opportunities for teaching to a diverse group of students. Hence, more diligence and detailed analysis is called for when interpreting the results of comparative international studies on education, where countries are often construed as homogeneous wholes.

Examination of Pre-Service Elementary School Mathematics Teachers' Knowledge for Algebra Teaching

Derya Çelik; Mustafa Güler

Article History: Received 26.02.2017 Received in revised form 27.07.2017 Accepted 18.08.2017 Available online 01.10.2017 The present study aims to analyze pre-service elementary school mathematics teachers’ knowledge for teaching algebra in the context of algebra pedagogical content knowledge. For this purpose, a valid and reliable test (Algebra Pedagogical Content Knowledge Test) of 20 questions on the basis of the conceptual framework of knowledge for teaching algebra, as built by McCrory et al. (2012), was developed and applied with 101 senior-year pre-service teachers enrolled at a state university. The results reveal that the pre-service teachers exhibit mediocre performance in terms of algebra pedagogical content knowledge. The pre-service teachers were observed to experience difficulties regarding sub-components of algebra pedagogical content knowledge, namely student recognition. They also exhibited difficulty with the “functions and their properties: linear and nonlinear” in algebra content and the “core concepts and procedures” in the domains of mathematical knowledge.

The aim of present study is to reveal pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ (PEMTs) beliefs about mathematics in national perspective and to compare the regional differences. The sample of study was composed of 1418 PEMTs enrolled in 21 different universities as 4 th year students in Turkey. 12 regions determined in Nomenclature of Territorial Units orxa0Statisticsxa0(NUTS) Level 1 were considered during the selection of sample universities. As data collection tools, “beliefsxa0aboutxa0the nature of mathematics”, “beliefs about mathematics learning” and “beliefsxa0aboutxa0the achievement in mathematics” scales which were developed in TEDS-M study and contain a total of five factors were used. The collected data were analyzed to descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA test using SPSS packet software. The findings indicated that PEMTs commonly have dynamic views toward nature of mathematics in the context of universities and regions. However, the static view representing the traditional aspect of mathematics also had a reasonably high percentile. Significant differences among universities and regions were determined in terms of beliefs about nature of mathematics, learning mathematics and mathematics achievement. To identify the possible reasons of the differences, it is suggested to carry out in-depth qualitative investigations to examine the variables such as courses and their contents, classroom applications in education faculties on the basis of universities and regions.

The Effect of Goal Orientation on Student Achievement

Mustafa Güler

The effect of goal orientation on student achievement was examined in this meta-analysis study. A total of 426 research studies were collected during the literature review, out of which 154 correlation values were included in the meta-analysis. The 154 values belong to 106 independent research studies which were compiled in order to obtain a sample size of 61,191 subjects. The results of the random effect model showed that goal orientation has a low-level positive effect on student achievement. The moderators identified for the study were the type of publication, the sample group (education level), the school subject or assessment type, the country (culture) in which the research was carried out and the year of the studies, of which only country was found to be a moderator variable.

Critical views of 8th grade students toward statistical data in newspaper articles: Analysis in light of statistical literacy

Mustafa Güler; Kadir Gürsoy; Bülent Güven

AbstractUnderstanding and interpreting biased data, decision-making in accordance with the data, and critically evaluating situations involving data are among the fundamental skills necessary in the modern world. To develop these required skills, emphasis on statistical literacy in school mathematics has been gradually increased in recent years. The critical views of 8th graders with respect to statistical data presented in several newspaper articles were investigated from various aspects through this descriptive study. The study was conducted in a middle school with 9 students at the 8th grade level. The statistical data included in news articles selected from different national newspapers published in Turkey were used to collect the data. Through clinical interviews, the evaluations of the students were determined from the aspects of consistency, sample, data collection, data analysis, data presentation, and data support; the reasoning behind the students’ evaluations was also discussed. As a result, it...

The aim of this study is to investigate the views of mathematics teachers on the effectiveness of branch teachers’ committee meeting. The study was carried out with 97 (61 elementary school and 36 secondary school) mathematics teachers who were working in different regions of Turkey. For data collection, a questionnaire consisting of 20 items developed by Demirtas and Comert (2006) and a form included open-ended questions were used. In order to analyze the gathered data, content analysis technique was performed. At the end of the study it was observed that the views of mathematics teachers on effectiveness of committee meetings are amount to on average. Besides, the quantitative findings, the answers given to open – ended questions showed that a considerable amount of teachers see branch teachers’ committee meeting as a matter of form and have weak beliefs in the necessity of the meetings. Through the findings gathered, some recommendations were made by the researchers
