We experimentally demonstrate an optical node with time-space-and- wavelength domain contention resolution, deflection and dropping capability. The node is composed of an optical buffer based on an optical crossconnect and a wavelength converter. Although the experimental results are shown at 10 Gbit/s the bitrate can be increased substantially. Bit-error rate measurements are shown, sustaining only 3.5 dB power penalty after 10mus of optical buffering and agile wavelength conversion over 18nm span.

We demonstrate that if two optical packets arrive at the optical switch at the same time and are destined for the same output port, the contention is detected by electronic control and resolved with a delay buffer.t

We experimentally show up to 10 ¿s ms of optical buffering and wavelength conversion over 18nm, sustaining only 3.5dB of power penalty, in an optical node at 10 Gbit/s. The node is hence capable of time-space-and-wavelength domain contention resolution.

4×4 optical multicast using crosspoint switch matrix is investigated. Power penalty of 8.5 dB and 2 dB gain per increase of input scale are found. Measured results confirm the excellent multicast characteristics.

Time-slot interchange is investigated using an optical buffer with a large variable delay based on an active-vertical-coupler crosspoint switch. The delay could range from 1 to 999 time slots in our scheme, and the length of the time slot is correspondingly flexible. The experiment could be performed at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s. The results show the power penalty is about 1.5 and 5.6 dB, respectively, when the packets pass through two buffers and through one buffer nine times.
