The essential oils produced from 9 different cultivars of Ocimum basilicum L. were analysed by GC–MS, and classified into five cultivar groups. The oil from a local cultivar in the Philippines, rich in estragol, was examined in more detail by solvent extraction, distillation and column chromatography when many unusual volatile components, not detected previously in basil oils, were identified.
