The present article analyses the speeches on educational statistics released in publications which circulated in the decades of 1930 and 1940. The sources used hereby were produced in the Servico de Estatistica de Educacao e Saude, under the coordination of Teixeira de Freitas, and in the Instituto Nacional de Estudos Pedagogicos, organized by Lourenco Filho. The focus of this article is on perception of the existence of different appropriations for the educational statistical numbers. There is a considarable link between the aspects that are chosen to be mentioned in each case and the issues that are on the scene in the fields in which each author is initially attached to – as we intend to highlight by the analysis undertaken.

The present article intends to propose the argumentation that the movement of students by Brazilian mandatory school only acquires signs of educational political problem from the 1930’s on. It indicates that the current sense of the notion of student failure is defined only in the XX century, although it was possible to fail students since before. It intends to show further that, in articulation with political and cultural changes in education — as the statement of the compulsory school, the definition of school grades model and the primacy of the homogeneity of classes — the existence of better statistics and systematic ones after 1931 decisively contributed in defining the conditions for the possibility of inclusion, on the political agenda, of student failure as a problem.

O presente artigo analisa um conjunto de livros de matricula, produzidos no Rio Grande do Sul, entre os anos de 1895 e 1919, buscando compreender, pelos dados de preenchimento e pelas categorias adotadas para a identificacao dos inscritos, a trajetoria escolar dos alunos, as idades de ingresso e frequencia e o tempo de permanencia na escola. Pretendeu-se articular as disposicoes dos decretos relativos a instrucao publica com os registros na documentacao estudada. Intencionou-se, tambem, em alguma medida, colaborar na reflexao sobre as potencialidades e os limites da escrituracao escolar como fontes que podem contribuir para a compreensao de aspectos da pratica escolar e a experiencia dos alunos no periodo indicado.
