Professional and domestic work arrangements of women general practitioners in France

Parallel to the increase in the number of women taking up medical careers, the reform of the 3rd cycle of medical studies in France has brought about some changes in professional norms. The traditional model of general practitioner (GP) practice usually refers to a totally dedicated male doctor, with the domestic support of a female carer. For many women doctors this model of reference clashes head on with the traditional division of the roles between women and men. The current forms of the “social contract between the sexes” are questioned and women GPs introduce specific (time) strategies for managing medical practice and family life.

Du temps professionnel total à la régulation des temps sociaux : les jeunes générations de médecins devant l’émergence d’un nouvel éthos temporel

Résumé Cet article explore l’hypothèse d’un changement d’ « éthos temporel » à l’oeuvre chez les nouvelles générations de médecins en s’appuyant sur une recherche menée auprès de médecins (hommes et femmes), âgés de 30 à 35 ans, toutes spécialités confondues. L’éthos professionnel classique des médecins valorise une disponibilité temporelle inconditionnelle pour les patients, le temps de travail en venant à submerger les autres temps sociaux. Une partie des jeunes médecins prend ses distances par rapport à cet éthos : les temps sociaux « non travaillés » ont acquis une forte légitimité qui se traduit dans des pratiques diverses de régulation du temps de travail.
