Psychologists have had an increasing role in the medical area. The objective of this study is to report the development and current status of the Psychology Service at Hospital de Base, Sao Jose do Rio Preto Medical School (FAMERP), which started in 1981, when a psychologist was hired to work at the Pediatrics Outpatient Ward. Currently, the hospital has a staff of 40 psychologists (professors, supervisors, and residents), developing community services, education and research activities in Health Psychology. Such activities are carried out at a primary, secondary and tertiary level at the outpatient ward of the hospital and at a Medical School Health Community Center, especially with interdisciplinary teams. Teaching involves classes in post-graduation courses in medicine and nursing; internships for psychology students; a Residency Program in Health Psychology; Extension, Specialization, and Teaching Courses; and assistance to graduate students from the Post-Graduation Program in Health Sciences (masters degree and PhD) at FAMERP. Research is aimed at assessing the relationship between behavior and health, approaching issues such as providing health, prevention and assistance in the treatment and management of diseases. Even though this is an expanding area, the maintenance of credibility and the progress achieved depend on a solid professional training, ethics and the development of research in the area.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disease with multifactorial etiology for which, so far, there is no effective medicinal treatment. However, by means of kinesiotherapy intervention and patient guidance and care, physiotherapy can delay physical functional losses, muscle fatigue and immobility of the joint-muscle system, thereby improving the quality of life. This survey had the aim of reviewing the physiotherapeutic conduct currently used in ALS cases. Monthly monitoring is recommended, with changes in goals and conduct at each stage of the disease, activities to be pursued around the home, and emphasis on stretching, muscle strengthening, posture adequacy and respiratory kinesiotherapy.

Sexual violence is a serious problem of public health: it reaches all social classes, ethnics, religions and cultures, specially children and adolescents of the female sex. The objective of the present study is to describe the impact of a cognitive-behavior intervention on a 13-year-old adolescent, victim of rape attempt. The process included 45 sessions, distributed in initial evaluation, intervention, final evaluation and follow-up. It also used semi-directed interview, DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), cognitive-behavior techniques, and mother counseling. On the first interview the therapist identified school and behavior problems, symptoms of pos-traumatic stress disorder and moderate symptoms of depression, intensified by the episode of violence. Transgerational standard repetition was also observed: promiscuous behavior, alcoholism, sexual violence and relationship instability. Results demonstrated reduction of the initial complaints, acquisition of new behavior repertoire, better psicossocial functioning and positive impact of the intervention. The data indicate the need for inclusion of the family in the process.

Marcos Ricardo Datti Micheletto; Vera Lúcia Adami Raposo do Amaral; Nelson Iguimar Valério; Agnes Cristina Fett-Conte

Early stimulation provides significant benefits for Down syndrome individuals, their families and society. This study evaluated the effect of genetic counseling on the adherence behavior of parents to stimulation therapy, the factors that influence access to genetic counseling and to treatment and the satisfaction supplied by counseling. The parents of 12 individuals participated in this study using routine semi-structured interviews at three stages: before counseling, after counseling and follow-up. In spite of the difficulties to access genetic counseling and treatment, most parents were satisfied with the service. This process significantly influenced the adherence to treatment as, probably, the guidance was responsible for changes in behavior. Well-defined rules, useful in Down syndrome, promoted behavioral changes. Rules function as a discriminative stimulus for parents to adherence to the treatment of their children.Early stimulation provides significant benefits for Down syndrome individuals, their families and society. João Batista Salomão Junior; Maria Cristina de Oliveira Santos Miyazaki; José Antônio Cordeiro; Neide Aparecida Micelli Domingos; Nelson Iguimar Valério

The aim of this study was to assess social skills and behavioral disorders in children with asthma. Participants included 62 children/adolescents (between 7 and 16 years of age) with moderate and severe asthma and a control group whose parents completed the Brazilian version of the Child Behavior Checklist. Results: There is evidence of an association between asthma and deficiencies in overall social skills related to activities (p=0.001) and school (p=0.01). The severity of the asthma has no clear link to social skills. There is evidence of an association between behavioral disorders and asthma, especially internalizing disorders, such as anxiety and depression, irrespective of sex, age and severity of asthma. Children/adolescents with asthma had more problems with general social skills and skills associated with activities and school, when compared to the control group. They also had more general and internalizing disorders, which may impair their progress, quality of life and the satisfactory management of the illness.
