The aim of this research was to verify the readiness for the treatment in alcoholics who were taking part of a therapeutical intervention, following the Minnesota Model. A sample of 25 moderate and severe level alcoholists took part on this research. They ranged from 23 to 60 years of age, both male and female. The scale SADD and SOCRATES were applied during the first interview, in the beginning of the treatment. Three additional interviews were performed in the middle, at the end and one month after the treatment, to appraise the readiness for the treatment through SOCRATES scale. The results showed that, although there had been 64% of adhesion to treatment, there was not reduction of ambivalence of the alcoholics. There has been significant correlation between the SOCRATES scale factors. This research points to the need of using motivating techniques to reduce the ambivalence, in order to increase the adhesion and to prevent relapse.

Marcos Ricardo Datti Micheletto; Vera Lúcia Adami Raposo do Amaral; Nelson Iguimar Valério; Agnes Cristina Fett-Conte

Early stimulation provides significant benefits for Down syndrome individuals, their families and society. This study evaluated the effect of genetic counseling on the adherence behavior of parents to stimulation therapy, the factors that influence access to genetic counseling and to treatment and the satisfaction supplied by counseling. The parents of 12 individuals participated in this study using routine semi-structured interviews at three stages: before counseling, after counseling and follow-up. In spite of the difficulties to access genetic counseling and treatment, most parents were satisfied with the service. This process significantly influenced the adherence to treatment as, probably, the guidance was responsible for changes in behavior. Well-defined rules, useful in Down syndrome, promoted behavioral changes. Rules function as a discriminative stimulus for parents to adherence to the treatment of their children.Early stimulation provides significant benefits for Down syndrome individuals, their families and society.

Vera Lúcia Adami Raposo do Amaral

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease wich requires a highly complex treatment. Researches have been done with the objective of understanding the role that life style and behavioral factors play on the onset and control of the disease. The present study aimed at analysing the contingencies involved in the behavior of adherence and non adherence to treatment of a type 2diabetes mellitus patient and the dependency relationship between behavioral and environmental variables in a single case study. The procedure adopted for data collection was the characterization of behaviors according to the following categories: glucemia measurement, insulin administration, diet control and the practice of physical exercise. Results indicate the prevalence of aversive contingencies and demonstrate the need of teaching the pacient self control strategies, and rules by the health team which describe the environmental contingencies in operation.

Amanda Muglia Wechsler; Vera Lúcia Adami Raposo do Amaral

Verbal correspondence can be defined as the relationship between verbal and non verbal individuals behaviors. This study had as objective to describe correspondence behaviors of mothers and sons in a natural situation in a medical context. Seven mother-child pairs (children with ages between five and eight years-old) and one physician participated in the research. With each pair, there were three moments: 1) an interview with the mother and child separately before the medical examination, 2) filming of the examination and 3) interview after the examination with mother and son, separately. The results demonstrated that, from the categorized behaviors, most children showed total verbal correspondence say-do-say (33,33%). However, the mothers had most of their behaviors categorized as non- correspondence (36,84%). This research suggests that variables such as age, social- economical level, educational level and context may have some influence in the emergency of natural verbal correspondence.ABSTRACT.

Vera Lúcia Adami Raposo do Amaral
