Thermoplastic starch/natural rubber blends

Thermoplastic starch/natural rubber polymer blends were prepared using directly natural latex and cornstarch. The blends were prepared in an intensive batch mixer at 150 °C, with natural rubber content varying from 2.5 to 20%. The blends were characterised by mechanical analysis (stress-strain) and by scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed a reduction in the modulus and in tensile strength, becoming the blends less brittle than thermoplastic starch alone. Phase separation was observed in some compositions and was dependent on rubber and on plasticiser content (glycerol). Increasing plasticiser content made possible the addition of higher amounts of rubber. The addition of rubber was, however, limited by phase separation the appearance of which depended on the glycerol content. Scanning electron microscopy showed a good dispersion of the natural rubber in the continuos phase of thermoplastic starch matrix.

Thermogravimetric studies of decomposition kinetics of six different IAC Hevea rubber clones using Flynn–Wall–Ozawa approach

Abstract The thermal degradation behaviour of rubber from six new Hevea brasiliensis clones (IAC 40, 56, 300, 301, 302 and 303) from São Paulo State, Brazil was studied by thermogravimetry using the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa approach to assess the kinetic parameters (reaction order, activation energy and pre-exponential factor) of the decomposition process. This study indicated that the thermal behaviour is a complex multiple step process, which depends on the type of rubber Hevea clones studied. The rubber from these clones can be classified, following the order of decreasing thermal stability, as IAC 303 > 302 > 56 > 40 > 300 > 301.

Although the analysis in the frequency domain of the Electromyographic Signal (EMG) has been used in the characterization of the localized muscular fatigue process, its application, specifically the Median Frequency (MF), is rarely explored in sports. The objective of this study was to verify the viability of the EMG signal application, through its frequency domain analysis, as a parameter for determination and differentiation of the behavior of localized muscle fatigue. Two groups of subjects, one characterized as athletes (n = 12) and the other as sedentary (n = 12), were submitted to analysis based on procedures from three different experimental situations, all involving isometric exercise modality: i) maximum test for determination of the Maximum Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC); ii) fatigue test, 35 sec. sustained load of 80% of MVIC; iii) recovery test, 10 sec. sustained load of 80% of MVIC. In the latter, the MF behavior in the three first (Fmedi) and three last (Fmedf) seconds of the EMG signal of tibialis anterior muscle during the fatigue test have been monitored. During the 10 seconds of the recovery test, MF was calculated regarding the whole period (Fmedr); this parameter was used to calculate the Muscular Recovery Index (MRI). The results showed that Fmedf presented lower value in relation to Fmedi in both groups (p 0.05). Therefore, the results presented in this study allow inferring the viability in the application of the frequency domain parameters of the EMG signal for the determination and differentiation of localized muscle fatigue behavior.

Efeitos da eletroestimulação do músculo vasto medial oblíquo em portadores de síndrome da dor patelofemoral: uma análise eletromiográfica

BACKGROUND: The use of surface electromyography (SEMG) has been considered a tool for quantitative assessment of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Conservative treatments aim to improve patellar alignment, and electrical stimulation of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) muscle has been considered effective because it is selective and does not cause joint irritation. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the efficiency of a muscle strengthening program with electrical stimulation of the VMO muscle in PFPS by SEMG. METHODS: A group of ten young women (age: 23.1±4.9 years; body mass: 66.8±14.0 kg; height: 1.63±6.9 cm; BMI: 25.1±5.6 kg/m2) with unilateral PFPS participated in the study. They performed the functional test of stair stepping to capture the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the VMO and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles, before and after a program of electrical stimulation of the VMO muscle. The electrical stimulation was performed three times per week for six weeks. For analysis between the VMO and VL muscles, we considered the variables: ratio of time of onset to peak of activation, ratio of the integrals of the signals (t-test for dependent samples), and difference between onsets of activation (Wilcoxon test), with significance level of p<0.05. RESULTS: The results only showed change in behavior in the EMG signal for the ratio of the integrals of the signals, indicating that changes occurred in the force-generating capacity of the muscle after the training. CONCLUSION: The use of electrical stimulation should be considered to complement the conservative therapeutic approach in patients with PFPS, and the analysis of the ratio of the integrals of the SEMG signals should be considered as an instrument of evaluation. Physical Vapor Deposited Thin Films of Lignins Extracted from Sugar Cane Bagasse: Morphology, Electrical Properties, and Sensing Applications

The concern related to the environmental degradation and to the exhaustion of natural resources has induced the research on biodegradable materials obtained from renewable sources, which involves fundamental properties and general application. In this context, we have fabricated thin films of lignins, which were extracted from sugar cane bagasse via modified organosolv process using ethanol as organic solvent. The films were made using the vacuum thermal evaporation technique (PVD, physical vapor deposition) grown up to 120 nm. The main objective was to explore basic properties such as electrical and surface morphology and the sensing performance of these lignins as transducers. The PVD film growth was monitored via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance, revealing a linear relationship between absorbance and film thickness. The 120 nm lignin PVD film morphology presented small aggregates spread all over the film surface on the nanometer scale (atomic force microscopy, AFM) and homogeneous on the micrometer scale (optical microscopy). The PVD films were deposited onto Au interdigitated electrode (IDE) for both electrical characterization and sensing experiments. In the case of electrical characterization, current versus voltage (I vs V) dc measurements were carried out for the Au IDE coated with 120 nm lignin PVD film, leading to a conductivity of 3.6 × 10(-10) S/m. Using impedance spectroscopy, also for the Au IDE coated with the 120 nm lignin PVD film, dielectric constant of 8.0, tan δ of 3.9 × 10(-3), and conductivity of 1.75 × 10(-9) S/m were calculated at 1 kHz. As a proof-of-principle, the application of these lignins as transducers in sensing devices was monitored by both impedance spectroscopy (capacitance vs frequency) and I versus time dc measurements toward aniline vapor (saturated atmosphere). The electrical responses showed that the sensing units are sensible to aniline vapor with the process being reversible. AFM images conducted directly onto the sensing units (Au IDE coated with 120 nm lignin PVD film) before and after the sensing experiments showed a decrease in the PVD film roughness from 5.8 to 3.2 nm after exposing to aniline.

Thermogravimetric studies of the decomposition kinetics of four different Hevea rubber clones using Ozawa's approach

Thermal degradation behavior of rubber from four rubber clones (RRIM 600, PB 235, GT1 and IAN 873) of the Hevea brasiliensis species was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) using Ozawas approach to assess the kinetic parameters of the decomposition process. These parameters indicated that the thermal behavior of natural rubber depends on the type of rubber clones studied. The order of reaction was found to be dependent on the degree of conversion indicating that both the early and the latter stages of rubber degradation follow zero or pseudo-zero order kinetics whereas the intermediate stages follow a first order kinetics and the activation energy was found to be dependent on the degree of conversion and the type of clone used ragging from 148 to 236 kJ/mol. Rubber from clones IAN 873, GT1 and RRIM 600 presented the best overall thermal stability whereas the clone PB 235 presented the lowest thermal stability, therefore in agreement with the plasticity retention index (PRI) behavior.

Influence of preparation methods and thermal treatment in melt-solidified and cast films of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene)copolymers

Abstract This paper is aimed at addressing the differences observed in film properties when poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) P(VDF-TrFE) films are fabricated using distinct methods. Samples were obtained either from casting a solution or by compression molding from a molten phase and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is shown that the main differences between melt-solidified and cast films arise from the thermal treatment inherent in the former samples.

Water-gated organic transistors on polyethylene naphthalate films

Water-gated organic transistors have been successfully exploited as potentiometric transducers in a variety of sensing applications. The device response does not depend exclusively on the intrinsic properties of the active materials, as the substrate and the device interfaces play a central role. It is therefore important to fine-tune the choice of materials and layout in order to optimize the final device performance. Here, polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) has been chosen as the reference substrate to fabricate and test flexible transistors as bioelectronic transducers in liquid. PEN is a biocompatible substrate that fulfills the requirements for both bio-applications and micro-fabrication technology. Three different semiconducting or conducting polymer thin films employing pentacene, poly(3-hexylthiophene) or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) were compared in terms of transconductance, potentiometric sensitivity and response time. The different results allow us to identify material properties crucial for the optimization of organic transistor-based transducers operating in water.

On the equivalence of the mechanisms governing switching and hysteresis phenomena

The nucleation and growth model, which is usually applied to switching phenomena, is adapted for explaining surface potential measurements on the P(VDF-TrFE) (polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymer obtained in a constant current corona triode. It is shown that the growth is one-dimensional and that the nucleation rate is unimportant, probably because surface potential measurements take much longer than the switching ones. The surface potential data can therefore be accounted for by a growth model in which the velocity of growth varies exponentially with the electric field. Since hysteresis loops can be obtained from surface potential measurements, it is suggested that similar mechanisms can be used when treating switching and hysteresis phenomena, provided that account is taken of the difference in the time scale of the measurements.<<ETX>>
