Abstract Tour operators today play a very important role in creating the images of destinations. In this global capacity, they can significantly influence international tourism flows towards a country hit by safety and security risks. Even decisions of individual tourists on where to spend a holiday very often depend on the attitude and practice of tour operators towards a particular destination. This paper analyzes the significance of tour operators on the recovery of destinations hit by crisis. Recommendations are offered of the steps that can be taken by the destination itself to become re-established on the international market.

The main trend that can be identified in the travel distribution system is the consolidation of tour operators in the tourism market. This is the result of global processes of development in the world economy that have had an inevitable influence on tourism travel and, with it, on the devleopment strategies of the leading European tour operators.

Abstract The Delphi survey as an effective qualitative marketing research tool was designed to project the future Croatian tourism scenario from 2001 through the year 2020. It is predicted that Croatian tourism industry will grow and prosper substantially over the next decade due to increased tourist demand for non-traditional holiday destinations. There will also be a high demand for activity-based tourism and eco-tourism. Although the tourism demand projections predict positive trends in the coming term, it is subject to a host of uncontrollable factors which make long-term projections difficult and cumbersome. In view of the developments and changes, tourism industry operators and public sector planners need scientifically accepted projection bases for tourism investment and effective operational tourism decisions. In this vein, this research qualitatively forecasts the tourism market potential and identifies the most significant future trends in Croatian tourism and hospitality.

ABSTRACT In recent years the attitude of tour operators towards the environment in tourism destinations has been slowly changing, as consumers have put greater pressure towards sustainable tourism. Although there are just a few tour operators in Europe that take responsibility for sustainability and the environment, these are among the biggest ones, and they have the power and are willing to change their practice and the practice of many others in this business. Moreover, their central position in the tourism system gives them great potential to influence the decisions and behaviour of both sides: tourists and service providers.

This paper examines students’ motivations for participating in field trips and analyses students’ expectations in an attempt to identify the influence of three variables: age, level of education, and previous work experience. Results demonstrate that students’ reasons for participation are diverse, and while the results are specific for the case analysed, they support prior research, suggesting that students develop very positive attitudes and perceptions towards field trips.

A key element in the product mix of destinations is climate. Climate represents a critical part of a destination’s economic and resource base such that changes in climate will trigger human responses in terms of demand and the type of activities that the climate will support. This threatens the competitiveness, sustainability, and economic viability of destinations. This research note focuses on destination adaptation to climate change that is anticipatory not reactive, based on projecting future climate scenarios for a destination and then assessing the tourism products that the future climate will support. It outlines an original data-driven approach to adaptation that is generalizable to other destinations. The research note describes an exploratory research collaboration in Croatia between tourism and climate scientists that allows, first, the modeling of a destination’s projected climate conditions and, second, the products and activities that can be supported by these climate scenarios using climate indices for tourism.
