Isotope exchange reaction on lithium oxide

Abstract Lithium oxide is the most potential solid breeder material among various solid breeder candidates because of its high lithium density and high melting point. In recent blanket designs, He sweep gas with hydrogen isotopes is planned to be used for recovery the tritium bred in solid breeder material. This method is based on the isotope exchange reaction that is expected to promote the tritium release from blanket materials. However, a quantitative consideration on the exchange reaction rate has not been done yet. In the present work, the isotope exchange reaction between water adsorbed on Li 2 O pellets and hydrogen isotopes in sweep gas is studied experimentally.
