Seungjun Kim; Jongeun Cha; Jong-Phil Kim; Jeha Ryu; Seongeun Eom; Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Byung-Ha Ahn

In this paper, we demonstrate an immersive and interactive broadcasting production system with a new haptically enhanced multimedia broadcasting chain. The system adapts Augmented Reality (AR) techniques, which merges captured videos and virtual 3D media seamlessly through multimedia streaming technology, and haptic interaction technology in near real-time. In this system, viewers at the haptic multimedia client can interact with AR broadcasting production transmitted via communication network. We demonstrate two test applications, which show that the addition of AR- and haptic-interaction to the conventional audio-visual contents can improve immersiveness and interactivity of viewers with rich contents service.

Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Jeha Ryu; Byung-Ha Ahn

This work involves specification, design and development of system level application software for the management of distributed control network (DCN), using which intelligent field components can be built, configured and managed. In particular the paper studies the required methodological infrastructure and design aspects of management layer (ML) for DCN. Moreover, the ML integrates simulation platform a top-level environment, by using which DCN validation can be achieved. The developed platform is modular and flexible which utilizes the benefit of object oriented and client-server approach, respectively. The utility of the developed platform is explained by demonstrating implementation with material handling system and spindle system, separately. It is concluded that the developed tool will improve the design capability by reducing the design time and improving productivity.

Attributes of industrial machine and process control systems

Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik

The design of advanced Machine and Process Control Systems (MPCSs) is highly complex and interdisciplinary in nature involving state-of-the-art technology. Machine and process control design is built on experience of major failures, requirements, optimisation and methodological change. Although, the underlying concepts of run-time architecture have already been firmly established, an exploration is necessary to radically improve the effectiveness as far as integrability is concerned. This paper reviews some of the important attributes of industrial MPCSs. Having a view of flexibility and agility, it is perceived that the MPCSs have a typical set of essential requirements. Especially, attributes such as Resource Conscious Software Development (RCSD), components-based electronic control, Diagnostics and Prognostics (DAP) and Integration of Data and Control Network (IDCN) are mainly discussed.

Seungjun Kim; Hojung Kim; Seongeun Eom; Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Byung-Ha Ahn

Most of the traveller guidance services (TGS) are based on GPS technology and generally concerned with the position data mapping on the simplified 2D electronic map in order to provide macro level service facility such as drive direction notifications. Digital GIS based GPS entails in situ intuitive visualization. The visually enhanced TGS can improve the global and local awareness of unknown areas. In this paper, we propose a reliable new TGS system that provides 3D street as well as pin-pointed destination information in two stages of its interactive services; web-based and AR-based. The web server generates a guiding path on 2D digital map and displays 3D car-driving animation along the path. And, the AR-based service is embedded so that users can interactively obtain the detailed micro-level information of a specific section in the area with their fingertips. The implementation is based on autoformation of on-line GIS data structures from the available priori. For the verification, a 5×4 road network is selected as a test area. In the service demonstration, we show the effective awareness of street environments and the usefulness of this new TGS system.

Abstract Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) preserves the merits of traditional Ethernet network while reducing complexities and improving quality of service (QoS). In this paper, a traffic-class burst-polling based delta dynamic bandwidth allocation (TCBP-DDBA) scheme is presented to provide better QoS to expedited forwarding packet and maximize channel utilization service to assure forwarding and best effort packets. The network resources are efficiently utilized and adaptively allocated to the three traffic classes by guaranteeing the requested QoS. Simulation results using OPNET show that the TCBP-DDBA scheme performs well in comparison to the conventional allocation scheme for a set of given parameters such as: packet delay, queue size, packet delay variation and channel utilization. This work considers system-wide DBA development in contrast to unit-based approach. It is concluded that the algorithm can be used for many types of EPON-based practical distributed networks.

Sustainability and Evolution Assessment (SEA) scheme in components and machineries

Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Sang Moon Soak

This paper presents work in terms of introducing a concept called Sustainability and Evolution Assessment (SEA) scheme, which is a step forward from conventional diagnostic methods. SEA is an improved method, which implements not only diagnostic features but also prognostic measures. SEA attempts on-line recording of life-cycle information from the technical processes and the components. The recorded data can be used to analyse the environmental impact during run-time for the reuse, recycle, remanufacture and especially for the design of next generation engineering systems.

Seokcheol Chang; Joungil Yun; Ju-sang Lee; SangUk Lee; Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Byung-Ha Ahn

Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on modeling the bargaining game using artificial agents on within-model interaction. However, very few attempts have been made at study on the interaction and co-evolutionary process among heterogeneous artificial agents. Therefore, we present two kinds of artificial agents, based on genetic algorithm (GA) and reinforcement learning (RL), which play a game on between-model interaction. We investigate their co-evolutionary processes and analyze their parameters using the analysis of variance.

Dynamic bandwidth allocation by using efficient threshold reporting for quality of service in Ethernet passive optical networks

Yeon-Mo Yang; Ji-Myong Nho; Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Kiseon Kim; Byung-Ha Ahn

We present a dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme for Eth- ernet passive optical networks. This scheme, referred to as TDBA, is based on efficient threshold reporting and provides quality of service QoS to three different classes of packets. It is shown that network resources are efficiently allocated among the three traffic classes while guaranteeing the requested QoS by avoiding nearly all fragmentation losses. Simulation results using OPNET show that the TDBA scheme provides better packet delay and channel utilization than the other pre- viously published allocation schemes.

An HILS and RCP based inter-working scheme for computational evaluation of manipulators and trajectory controller

Yeon-Mo Yang; Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Sung-Cheal Byun; See-Moon Yang; Byung-Ha Ahn

We propose a “Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation” (HILS) and “Rapid Control Prototyping” (RCP) based inter-working scheme for computational evaluation of manipulators and trajectory controller. The objective of the scheme is to minimize the development time in controller design and reduce the efforts in body modeling analysis, especially in the field of robotics. We have derived the analytical model of two manipulators for HILS and implemented an output controller for RCP; then two functional blocks are integrated to verify and validate the usefulness and possibility of HILS and RCP based inter-working (HRI) scheme. Experimental results show that the proposed HRI scheme is an effective means to apply for modeling the two elbow manipulators and implementing the selected controller for the manipulator applications in an early stage of the development cycle. Furthermore, HRI scheme has shown to be particularly beneficial for body dynamics analysis and manipulator control tasks.

IT based Toll Plaza Operation Strategy with ETCS

S. Akhtar Ali Shah; Hojung Kim; Nitaigour-Premchand Mahalik; Byung Ha Ahn; Yongsung Cho

With practical utilization of Electronic Toll Collection System (ETCS) and smart card system, Korea Highway Cooperation (KHC) has operated toll plazas from 2000 and made plans for expansion of these systems to all Freeways (National Highways). Nevertheless, the previous developed toll plaza design method using queuing model according to vehicles arrival rate and service time at a toll has limitations because of various payment type and dynamic change of inflow traffic volume. In this paper we developed IT integrated toll plaza simulation system sponsored by Korean government. In this advanced simulation system drivers stochastic lane selection behavior patterns are added. The important functions of toll plaza system in terms of three-phase operation flow and the drivers behavior model are incorporated. We evaluated the system for current capacity analysis of Guri toll plaza in Seoul beltway.
