Educational trust: relational and structural perspectives on young people on the margins of the education system

Anne Görlich; Noemi Katznelson

Background: Across Europe and the Nordic countries, it is widely agreed that the high proportion of 15–30-year olds not in employment, education or training is a challenge, which needs to be tackled by focusing on education. The political and institutional focus is on individual training readiness, individual qualification processes, individual building of confidence in oneself and so forth, culminating in an overall individual perspective. Purpose: The study argues for a shift in focus away from an individual perspective on young people on the margins of education and towards a relational perspective that takes the social environment and the education system into account. Sample: Respondents were 20 young people aged 17–24 who were participating in a specific project in a provincial town in Denmark, the aim of which was to encourage the youths to re-enter education. Design and methods: Qualitative data were collected through: (1) 40 semi-structured qualitative interviews with 11 young people on the margins of the education system, and (2) observations of 11 respondents’ participation in educational activity. The analysis was based on relational and social constructionist theories. Findings: The analysis of data from this small-scale study provides evidence to suggest that a shift in the current focus on the individual young person on the margins of education is needed. The concept of ‘educational trust’ is introduced as a supplement to the individual concept of self-confidence in order to capture the socially constructed aspects of the young adult’s participation in education. Conclusions: We identify three overall components of educational trust: (1) social security and recognition, (2) flexibility in structures and (3) progression in skills. The concept of educational trust, it is suggested, creates a shift in focus from the individual young person to the role and function of the education system in aiming to reach the target of more young people completing education.

Rethinking motivational challenges amongst young adults on the margin

Noemi Katznelson

ABSTRACT This article is concerned with how motivation to take an education can be stimulated in young adults who are on the margins of the labour market and educational system. It is widely accepted that young adults in such a position have motivational problems regarding education because of negative schooling experiences, interrupted education, absenteeism, etc. Despite this, in Europe, education is commonly proposed as the solution to the problem of the high proportion of 15–29 year-olds who are not in employment, education or training (NEET). This paradox of having to motivate young adults under pressure is the focus of the article. The article argues that there is a need to theoretically redefine motivation as a phenomenon linked to the individual to a more contextually embedded understanding of motivation as the result of a process between the young and their surroundings, opportunities and perspectives. The article presents a model with five motivational orientations suggesting a new perspective on re-motivating young adults on the margin of the labour market and educational system, while it also discusses the challenges connected to promoting a focus on motivation at a time when the liberalisation of education is increasingly central to the welfare state strategy.

Young People on the Margins of the Educational System: Following the Same Path Differently.

Anne Görlich; Noemi Katznelson

Abstract Background Across Europe and the Nordic countries, unemployment among 18–30 year-olds is a major challenge, which in some countries is being tackled by focusing on education. In Denmark, young unemployed people or people on the margins of the education system are assessed regarding what is known as an ‘education requirement’. Hence, education has become compulsory as a requirement for unemployed young people who claim social benefit. Purpose This study argues that in order to understand the variety and complexity in young people’s movement between education, training and jobs, we have to understand how those are embedded in current sociocultural conditions. Drawing on social constructionist theory, we analyse the interaction between the young people and the wider context. Method The article is based on qualitative analyses of focus group interviews with 62 young people in training programmes aiming at helping young adults into upper secondary education. Qualitative interviews were conducted across the country at 12 different projects. Four case projects were identified in order to conduct more in-depth fieldwork. Data were analysed qualitatively. Findings Overall, the analyses depict how a somewhat disorganised educational market, a changing labour market, a rapidly increasing tendency to diagnose, as well as increased demands related to performance, position the young people on the margins of the educational system. The analyses suggest that the young people’s ways of interacting with structural conditions are formed by ‘disorientation’, ‘lack of work’, ‘diagnosing’ and ‘vulnerability’. Conclusions According to the research presented, we suggest that it is necessary to address and develop more transparent pathways through education, and find new ways of solving the problem of a lack of apprenticeships. There is a need to devise solutions that involve the labour market more closely, address issues of the noteworthy increase in ‘diagnoses’ and how this affects young people, and find ways of reducing the pressure on young people in educational systems in general.
