Exploring the role of transactive memory system (TMS) for knowledge transfer processes in Malaysia E-government IT outsourcing

Nor Aziati Abdul Hamid; Juhana Salim

Knowledge transfer has attracted much attention to researchers and practitioners in recent years since knowledge transfer has been considered as a critical determinant of an organizations capacity to confer sustainable competitive advantage. Despite extensive research on knowledge transfer issues, there is a dearth of research that has explicitly focused on the role of transactive memory in enabling intra-organizational knowledge transfer in information technology (IT) outsourcing context, particularly e-government IT outsourcing. Although the information systems literature has recently acknowledged the role of transactive memory plays in improving knowledge processes, most of the research is still in the basic concept of transactive memory which is emphasized more on the individual communication concept rather than integrating those concept with the existing organization memory system. Moreover, it is still at a conceptual level rather than practical action for a firm to address. Therefore, this paper attempts to fill this gap by examining the factors that have been cited as significant influences on the ability to transfer knowledge from the vendor to the client organizations in the context of e-government IT outsourcing, and examine the role of transactive memory system towards effective knowledge transfer process between organizations. Drawing on several theoretical streams, this paper will propose an integrated conceptual framework of inter-organizational knowledge transfer which further can be used for research enhancement.

This study aimed to evaluate the working posture of bus traffic controllers. The Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) prevalence and the exposure to the ergonomic risks factors (ERFs) among bus traffic controllers were determined. There were 26 respondents (16 male and 10 female) who were bus traffic controllers (BTC) at a prominent bus service provider were selected as the subjects. Data for Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) prevalence among the bus traffic controllers were collected using Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) and direct observation and assessment of ergonomic risks factors were conducted via Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA). By using ROSA, the BTCs working posture and work environment were checked and measured in order to quantify the risks to ERFs. According to the assessment, more than half (15/26 respondents) of the bus traffic controllers were found to have an extreme posture with the ergonomic risk level was high (more than 4) (action level 3) which required a further investigation and changes of work habits soon. The research showed that most of the bus traffic controllers (BTC) were exposed to high ergonomics risk for MSDs development. To avoid MSDs, the personal working behaviours and the design of the computer-based workstations must be improved based on ergonomic principles.

The main objective of this study is to identify factors that has positive effect towards green manufacturing performance of automobile industry. Based on the underlying technological, organisational, environmental (TOE) theory, a culture and human capital domain has been added into the theory to have a comprehensive view on external and internal factors. By extensive literature review of green practices within automotive industry, ten factors were identified and categorized accordingly. Results of the study is expected to be essential for Malaysia automobile industry to implement green manufacturing operations more effectively and efficiently. Additionally, insight acquired may assist government agencies to outline green manufacturing policies and guideline. Identified factors will be further investigated to establish a green manufacturing evaluation model.

Nowadays, lean practices are implemented in many manufacturing and services companies. Lean practices are implemented in order to minimize wastes while maximise the overall performances in an organisation. In service sector, lean practices are importance to ensure value added services can be delivered to customers. However, Malaysia automotive companies cannot compete with Japanese automotive companies in terms of their customer satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to compare the lean practice between Japanese and Malaysia automotive service centres. A total of 80 questionnaires out of 100 distributed questionnaires were responded and this represented as 80% of response rate. The Mann-Whitney test result shows that there were four out of five factors of lean practices have significant differences between Japanese and Malaysia automotive service centres, which are TPM, JIT, Kanban, and 5S. VSM has not significant difference between ownerships. In addition, TPM, JIT, Kanban, VSM and 5S were higher practices in Japanese companies against Malaysia companies. Many Malaysia companies are still in the journey of lean practices and they need recommendation guidance to compete with other long-term established companies. Based on the survey result, the significant differences are identified as weak points of Malaysia companies as an opportunity to improve. Moreover, the significance of this study can help researchers and industry players to improve lean practices in automotive service industry.Nowadays, lean practices are implemented in many manufacturing and services companies. Product innovation refers to new products development and improvement of existing products. The importance of product innovation proliferated as the market grows and becomes more diversified. Among SMEs, product innovation is one of the most critical determinants for their survival, growth, and competitiveness. Nonetheless, product innovation among SMEs is still low, owning to various issues and challenges. This study attempts to focus the effect of transformational leadership and organizational culture on product innovation among 36 SMEs in Johor. A SEM-PLS was used to validate the measurement model and develop the path modeling among variables studied. It is found that both transformational leadership and organizational culture are significantly related to product innovation. This finding substantiates previous findings and lends supports to the important roles of both constructs in SME’s development.
