Stagnation-point flow over a stretching/shrinking sheet in a nanofluid

Norfifah Bachok; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

An analysis is carried out to study the steady two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of a nanofluid over a stretching/shrinking sheet in its own plane. The stretching/shrinking velocity and the ambient fluid velocity are assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the stagnation point. The similarity equations are solved numerically for three types of nanoparticles, namely copper, alumina, and titania in the water-based fluid with Prandtl number Pr = 6.2. The skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number, and the velocity and temperature profiles are presented graphically and discussed. Effects of the solid volume fraction φ on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Different from a stretching sheet, it is found that the solutions for a shrinking sheet are non-unique.

An analysis is carried out to study the heat transfer characteristics of steady two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of a copper (Cu)-water nanofluid over a permeable stretching/shrinking sheet. The stretching/shrinking velocity and the ambient fluid velocity are assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the stagnation-point. Results for the skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, velocity as well as the temperature profiles are presented for different values of the governing parameters. It is found that dual solutions exist for the shrinking case, while for the stretching case, the solution is unique. The results indicate that the inclusion of nanoparticles into the base fluid produces an increase in the skin friction coefficient and the heat transfer rate at the surface. Moreover, suction increases the surface shear stress and in consequence increases the heat transfer rate at the fluid-solid interface.MSC: 34B15, 76D10.

Stagnation Point Flow and Mass Transfer with Chemical Reaction past a Stretching/Shrinking Cylinder

Najwa Najib; Norfifah Bachok; Norihan Md. Arifin; Anuar Ishak

This paper is about the stagnation point flow and mass transfer with chemical reaction past a stretching/shrinking cylinder. The governing partial differential equations in cylindrical form are transformed into ordinary differential equations by a similarity transformation. The transformed equations are solved numerically using a shooting method. Results for the skin friction coefficient, Schmidt number, velocity profiles as well as concentration profiles are presented for different values of the governing parameters. Effects of the curvature parameter, stretching/shrinking parameter and Schmidt number on the flow and mass transfer characteristics are examined. The study indicates that dual solutions exist for the shrinking cylinder but for the stretching cylinder, the solution is unique. It is observed that the surface shear stress and the mass transfer rate at the surface increase as the curvature parameter increases.

Boundary Layer Stagnation-Point Flow Toward a Stretching/Shrinking Sheet in a Nanofluid

The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. A similarity solution is presented which depends on the Prandtl number Pr, Lewis number Le, Brownian motion parameter Nb and thermophoresis parameter Nt. It is found that the local Nusselt number is a decreasing function, while the local Sherwood number is an increasing function of each parameters Pr, Le, Nb, and Nt. Different from a stretching sheet, the solutions for a shrinking sheet are nonunique.

Stagnation point flow toward a stretching/shrinking sheet with a convective surface boundary condition

Norfifah Bachok; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

The steady two-dimensional stagnation point flow toward a stretching/shrinking sheet with the bottom surface of the sheet heated by convection from a hot fluid is considered. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically. Results for the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number as well as the temperature profiles are presented for different values of the governing parameters. Effects of the governing parameters on the heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Different from a stretching sheet, it is found that the solutions for a shrinking sheet are non-unique.

Mixed convection boundary layer flow over a permeable vertical flat plate embedded in an anisotropic porous medium

Norfifah Bachok; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

An analysis is performed to study the heat transfer characteristics of steady mixed convection flow over a permeable vertical flat plate embedded in an anisotropic fluid-saturated porous medium. The effects of uniform suction and injection on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics are numerically studied by employing an implicit finite difference Keller-box method. It is found that dual solutions exist for both assisting and opposing flows. The results indicate that suction delays the boundary layer separation, while injection accelerates it.

Mixed Convection Boundary Layer Flow over a Moving Vertical Flat Plate in an External Fluid Flow with Viscous Dissipation Effect

Norfifah Bachok; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

The steady boundary layer flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid over a moving vertical flat plate in an external moving fluid with viscous dissipation is theoretically investigated. Using appropriate similarity variables, the governing system of partial differential equations is transformed into a system of ordinary (similarity) differential equations, which is then solved numerically using a Maple software. Results for the skin friction or shear stress coefficient, local Nusselt number, velocity and temperature profiles are presented for different values of the governing parameters. It is found that the set of the similarity equations has unique solutions, dual solutions or no solutions, depending on the values of the mixed convection parameter, the velocity ratio parameter and the Eckert number. The Eckert number significantly affects the surface shear stress as well as the heat transfer rate at the surface.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to theoretically study the problem of the unsteady boundary layer flow past a permeable curved stretching/shrinking surface in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into ordinary differential equations by similarity transformation, which are then solved numerically. Design/methodology/approach The transformed system of ordinary differential equations was solved using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration scheme. Results for the reduced skin friction coefficient and velocity profiles are presented through graphs and tables for several sets of values of the governing parameters. The effects of these parameters on the flow characteristics are thoroughly examined. Findings Results show that for the both cases of stretching and shrinking surfaces, multiple solutions exist for a certain range of the curvature, mass suction, unsteadiness, stretching/shrinking parameters and magnetic field parameter. Originality/value The paper describes how multiple (dual) solutions for the flow reversals are obtained. It is shown that the solutions exist up to a critical value of the shrinking parameter, beyond which the boundary layer separates from the surface and the solution based upon the boundary layer approximations is not possible.

Boundary Layer Flow and Heat Transfer with Variable Fluid Properties on a Moving Flat Plate in a Parallel Free Stream

Norfifah Bachok; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

The steady boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a viscous fluid on a moving flat plate in a parallel free stream with variable fluid properties are studied. Two special cases, namely, constant fluid properties and variable fluid viscosity, are considered. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically by a finite-difference scheme known as Keller-box method. Numerical results for the flow and the thermal fields for both cases are obtained for various values of the free stream parameter and the Prandtl number. It is found that dual solutions exist for both cases when the fluid and the plate move in the opposite directions. Moreover, fluid with constant properties shows drag reduction characteristics compared to fluid with variable viscosity.

The effects of Soret and Dufour parameters on the boundary layer flow in nanofluid over stretching/ shrinking with time dependent is studied using Buongiorno model. The system of partial differential equations is transformed to the system of ordinary differential equations by applying similarity transformation. The results are obtained numerically using bvp4c in Matlab. The reduced skin friction coefficient reduced Nusselt number, velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are shown graphically with different values of Soret effect, Dufour effect, mass flux parameter, unsteadiness parameter, thermophoresis as well as Brownian motion parameter where the dual solutions are obtained. The unsteadiness parameter and mass flux parameter expand the range of solution for stretching/ shrinking parameter. Meanwhile, the Soret and Dufour parameters are found to affect the heat transfer rate at the surface. In order to determine the stability of the solutions, stability analysis is performed.
