Similarity solutions for flow and heat transfer over a permeable surface with convective boundary condition

Anuar Ishak

Abstract The steady laminar boundary layer flow over a permeable flat plate in a uniform free stream, with the bottom surface of the plate is heated by convection from a hot fluid is considered. Similarity solutions for the flow and thermal fields are possible if the mass transpiration rate at the surface and the convective heat transfer from the hot fluid on the lower surface of the plate vary like x −1/2 , where x is the distance from the leading edge of the solid surface. The governing partial differential equations are first transformed into ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically. The effects of the governing parameters on the flow and thermal fields are thoroughly examined and discussed.

Boundary layer flow past a stretching/shrinking surface beneath an external uniform shear flow with a convective surface boundary condition in a nanofluid

Nor Azizah Yacob; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop; K. Vajravelu

The problem of a steady boundary layer shear flow over a stretching/shrinking sheet in a nanofluid is studied numerically. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation, before being solved numerically by a Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method with shooting technique. Two types of nanofluids, namely, Cu-water and Ag-water are used. The effects of nanoparticle volume fraction, the type of nanoparticles, the convective parameter, and the thermal conductivity on the heat transfer characteristics are discussed. It is found that the heat transfer rate at the surface increases with increasing nanoparticle volume fraction while it decreases with the convective parameter. Moreover, the heat transfer rate at the surface of Cu-water nanofluid is higher than that at the surface of Ag-water nanofluid even though the thermal conductivity of Ag is higher than that of Cu.

MHD stagnation-point flow towards a shrinking sheet

Yian Yian Lok; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to theoretically investigate the steady two‐dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary layer flow over a shrinking sheet. The effects of stretching and shrinking parameter as well as magnetic field parameter near the stagnation point are studied.Design/methodology/approach – A similarity transformation is used to reduce the governing partial differential equations to a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations which are then solved numerically using Keller‐box method.Findings – The solution is unique for stretching case; however, multiple (dual) solutions exist for small values of magnetic field parameter for shrinking case. The streamlines are non‐aligned and a reverse flow is formed near the surface due to shrinking effect.Practical implications – The flow due to a stretching or shrinking sheet is relevant to several practical applications in the field of metallurgy, chemical engineering, etc. For example, in manufacturing industry, polymer sheets and fi...

Mixed Convection on the Stagnation Point Flow Toward a Vertical, Continuously Stretching Sheet

Anuar Ishak; Roslinda Nazar; Ioan Pop

The stagnation point flow toward a stretching vertical sheet is investigated in this study. The temperature and velocity of the sheet as well as the velocity of the external flow are assumed to vary in a power law with the distance from the stagnation point. The governing system of equations is first transformed into a dimensionless form, and then the resulting equations are solved numerically by a finite-difference method. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the governing parameters are analyzed and discussed. Both assisting and opposing flows are considered. It is found that, for opposing flow, dual solutions exist in the neighborhood of the separation region, whereas for assisting flow the solution is unique.

Stagnation-point flow over a stretching/shrinking sheet in a nanofluid

Norfifah Bachok; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

An analysis is carried out to study the steady two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of a nanofluid over a stretching/shrinking sheet in its own plane. The stretching/shrinking velocity and the ambient fluid velocity are assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the stagnation point. The similarity equations are solved numerically for three types of nanoparticles, namely copper, alumina, and titania in the water-based fluid with Prandtl number Pr = 6.2. The skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number, and the velocity and temperature profiles are presented graphically and discussed. Effects of the solid volume fraction φ on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Different from a stretching sheet, it is found that the solutions for a shrinking sheet are non-unique.

Boundary layer flow and heat transfer over a nonlinearly permeable stretching/shrinking sheet in a nanofluid

Khairy Zaimi; Anuar Ishak; Ioan Pop

The steady boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a nanofluid past a nonlinearly permeable stretching/shrinking sheet is numerically studied. The governing partial differential equations are reduced into a system of ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation, which are then solved numerically using a shooting method. The local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number and some samples of velocity, temperature and nanoparticle concentration profiles are graphically presented and discussed. Effects of the suction parameter, thermophoresis parameter, Brownian motion parameter and the stretching/shrinking parameter on the flow, concentration and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly investigated. Dual solutions are found to exist in a certain range of the stretching/shrinking parameter for both shrinking and stretching cases. Results indicate that suction widens the range of the stretching/shrinking parameter for which the solution exists.

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of a micropolar fluid towards a stagnation point on a vertical surface

Anuar Ishak; Roslinda Nazar; Ioan Pop

The steady MHD mixed convection stagnation point flow towards a vertical surface immersed in an incompressible micropolar fluid is investigated. The external velocity impinges normal to the wall and the wall temperature is assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the stagnation point. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, which is then solved numerically by a finite-difference method. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the governing parameters are analyzed and discussed. Both assisting and opposing flows are considered. It is found that dual solutions exist for the assisting flow, besides that usually reported in the literature for the opposing flow.

FALKNER-SKAN EQUATION FOR FLOW PAST A MOVING WEDGE WITH SUCTION OR INJECTION

Anuar Ishak; Roslinda Nazar; Ioan Pop

The characteristics of steady two-dimensional laminar boundary layer flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid past a moving wedge with suction or injection are theoretically investigated. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. The effects of Falkner-Skan power-law parameter (m), suction/injection parameter (f0) and the ratio of free stream velocity to boundary velocity parameter (λ) are discussed in detail. The numerical results for velocity distribution and skin friction coefficient are given for several values of these parameters. Comparisons with the existing results obtained by other researchers under certain conditions are made. The critical values off0,m and λ are obtained numerically and their significance on the skin friction and velocity profiles is discussed. The numerical evidence would seem to indicate the onset of reverse flow as it has been found by Riley and Weidman in 1989 for the Falkner-Skan equation for flow past an impermeable stretching boundary.

Boundary Layer on a Moving Wall with Suction and Injection

Anuar Ishak; Roslinda Nazar; Ioan Pop

We investigate the boundary-layer flow on a moving permeable plate parallel to a moving stream. The governing equations are solved numerically by a finite-difference method. Dual solutions are found to exist when the plate and the free stream move in the opposite directions.

Radiation Effects on the Flow and Heat Transfer over a Moving Plate in a Parallel Stream

Anuar Ishak

Effects of thermal radiation on the steady laminar boundary layer flow over a moving plate in a moving fluid is investigated. Under certain conditions, the present problem reduces to the classical Blasius and Sakiadis problems. It is found that dual solutions exist when the plate and the fluid move in the opposite directions. Moreover, the existence of thermal radiation is to reduce the heat transfer rate at the surface.
