BACKGROUND While administering medication through intramuscular injection, the ventrogluteal site must be used instead of the dorsogluteal site, and it is of great significance to locate the ventrogluteal site correctly. OBJECTIVE To determine the reliability of two different methods used to determine the ventrogluteal site in intramuscular injection practice. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTINGS A university hospital in Istanbul. PARTICIPANTS The study population comprised 120 randomly selected healthcare personnel at a university hospital. METHODS The ventrogluteal site was determined using the geometric (G method) and V method and these sites were scrutinized under ultrasonography. It was investigated whether there was any anatomic vessels or neural structure present, and also determined the thickness of subcutaneous tissue, musculus gluteus medius, and musculus gluteus minimus. RESULTS Of the participants, 65.8% were female and the average age was 32.30 years and body mass index was 25.31 kg/m(2). The results showed that G and V methods were statistically significant in terms of variables. It was also found that sex affects subcutaneous tissue thickness and the skin-bone margin in the G and V method, and that body mass index determines subcutaneous tissue, musculus gluteus medius thickness and skin-bone margin. CONCLUSION When the ventrogluteal site is used for intramuscular injection purposes, the site must be determined in line with the geometric method.

AIM Feelings of guilt and shame might affect the abilities of nursing and midwifery students when fulfilling their roles assertively and with professional autonomy during the interdisciplinary care and treatment process. The present study was conducted in order to examine the feelings of guilt and shame experienced by nursing and midwifery students with respect to certain variables. METHODS The population of this study, which had a cross-sectional design, comprised a total of 1002 students from three training locations: a school of nursing, the nursing program of a health vocational school, and the midwifery program of a health vocational school. From this population, 667 students were recruited to the study by a stratified random sampling method. Personal Information Forms and a Guilt-Shame Scale were used as data collection tools. RESULTS From amongst the students, 88.6% were women. The average age was 20.57 years; the mean scores of the guilt and shame subscales were 50.51 and 43.63, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between the guilt-shame scores of the students by the variants of gender, age, school, and year at school. CONCLUSIONS The present study concluded that midwifery and nursing students experience measurable feelings of guilt-shame and that the levels of guilt-shame had an impact on their targets regarding nursing/midwifery. Therefore, it is suggested that guidance programmes be established and that the related problems be resolved.

The Effect of Abdominal Massage on Constipation and Quality of Life.

Nuray Turan; Türkinaz Atabek Aşt

This study was a randomized controlled trial aimed to find the impact of abdominal massage application on constipation and quality of life among patients. The sample included 30 intervention (abdominal massage) and 30 control subjects. To collect data, the following were utilized: Patient Information Form, Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, Constipation Severity Instrument, Bristol Scale Stool Form, Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life (PAC-QOL) Scale, and European Quality of Life Instrument (EQ-5D). The data were collected from among patients in the morning and evening on the fourth, fifth, and sixth days postoperatively. No significant findings were discovered between experimental and control groups in terms of individual characteristics and characteristics that might influence constipation (p > .05). It was found that patients who received abdominal massage application defecated more often following their surgery than patients in the control group, which led to a statistically high level of significant difference between the groups (p ⩽ .001). It was also found that the experimental group displayed higher average PAC-QOL and EQ-5D scores on discharge. Findings indicated that abdominal massage applied to patients diagnosed with postoperative constipation reduced symptoms of constipation, decreased time intervals between defecation, and increased quality of life.

Attitudes toward Honor and Violence against Women for Honor in the Context of the Concept of Privacy: A Study of Students in the Faculty of Health Sciences

Nurten Kaya; Nuray Turan

The study was conducted to examine the attitudes of students of health sciences towards violence against women for honor within the context of the concept of privacy and to determine how the attitudes of midwifery students towards honor differ from those of other students. The research design chosen for this study is that of a survey. The subjects of the research consisted of students of health sciences (N=952), and the sample amounted to 473 students who were selected from this population by stratified random sampling method (departments and classes were taken as stratum criterion). A Student Information Form, the Attitudes towards Honor Scale (AHS), and the Attitudes towards Violence against Women for Protecting Honor Scale (AVWPHS) were used in the data collection. By considering that gender is an important confounding factor in attitudes towards honor, data were presented by dividing subjects into three groups: an all-female group from the midwifery department (MS, n=97), female students in other departments (FSOD, n=227), and male students in other departments (MSOD, n=148). It was observed that there was no difference between MS and FSOD scores for both AHS and AVWPHS. However, MSOD scores were statistically significantly higher than MS and FSOD scores. Although the attitudes of midwifery students in this respect are similar to those of female students in other departments of the faculty, they are different from the attitudes of male students.

Stan odżywienia pacjentów Neurochirurgicznego Oddziału Intensywnej Opieki Medycznej

Hatice Kaya; Nuray Turan; Gülsün Özdemir Aydın

Neurosurgical patients present important metabolic alterations that trigger increased energy and protein expenditure. The clinical condition in neuro patients associated with the use of sedatives, steroids, barbiturates and muscle-relaxing drugs postpones the use of nutrients in these patients and, thus, complications, including infection and longer hospitalization, may occur. Weight loss, negative nitrogen balance and immune dysfunction constitute a characteristic response in neurosurgical patients. There is a strong relationship between adequate nutritional status and recovery from critical illness. Improved nutritional status is associated with positive clinical outcomes. The health care team, nurses in particular, play a major role in the management and maintenance of an optimal nutritional status in patients who are in the neurosurgical clinic. This compilation aims at highlighting the fact that inadequate nutrition is a serious problem which increases incidence of morbidity and mortality especially in neurosurgical patients. The article also emphasises the importance of nursing assessment. (JNNN 2017;6(1):33–38)

Nursing role and responsibilities are continually changing with developments in medical science, policy directives and movements in priorities in health care, and advances emanating from nursing and scientific research. Hence, there is a need for entrepreneurial nurses, to maintain and improve the individual care. Nurse need to understand the process of the introduction and management of change so as to determine and carry through his/her position in the change process and participate as valid. Therefore education about entrepreneurship is becoming an important concept in nursing education.
