Total cost of ownership of WDM and switching architectures for next-generation 100Gb/s networks

Abhijeet D. Deore; Onur Turkcu; Satyajeet Ahuja; Steven Joseph Hand; Serge Melle

The bandwidth efficiency and relative costs for 100 Gb/s WDM transport and switching architectures are compared in North American and pan-European long-haul networks. The first architecture uses muxponders and ROADMs for end-to-end wavelength transport with no digital sub-wavelength grooming. The other two utilize digital OTN switching, as either a standalone OTN switch or a converged integrated WDM/switch system, to efficiently groom services onto WDM wavelengths. Results show the integrated WDM/switch architecture utilizes the fewest WDM wavelengths and client service interfaces, and an integrated WDM/switch architecture using photonic integrated circuit technology provides the lowest operational costs.

Bandwidth efficiency for 100Gb/s WDM and switch architectures are compared in a North American long-haul network. Results show that OTN grooming utilizes fewest WDM wavelengths, and integrated WDM/switch architecture utilizes fewest client service interfaces.

Comparison of converged packet-optical core network architectures

Serge Melle; Satyajeet Singh Ahuja; Onur Turkcu; Steven Joseph Hand

Two architectural approaches for converged packet-optical core networks are compared in a North American network: IP over WDM and IP over OTN. Results show a converged OTN/WDM layer reduces IP/MPLS and total packet-optical network costs.

Abishek Gopalan; Onur Turkcu; Biao Lu; Snigdho C. Bardalai; Parthiban Kandappan

We evaluate various multi-layer packet optical network architectures and study their efficiencies from a bandwidth utilization perspective — referred to as the bandwidth engineering capabilities of these architectures. We study the use-case of carrying fine-grained Ethernet traffic across core networks in each of these architectures and compare network efficiency and other qualitative metrics while highlighting some of the trade-offs in employing these architectures.

Benefits of sliceable photonic-based transponders in metro and long-haul networks

Sourav Das; Onur Turkcu; Anuj Malik; Pravin Mahajan; Biao Lu

In this paper, we analyze benefits of photonic integration-based sliceable transponders (sliceable photonics) compared to discrete optics transponder-based solutions (CFP/CFP2—C form-factor pluggable) in metro and long-haul networks. The metrics considered for comparison include the number of transponders, bandwidth use and power utilization. We assumed an OTN-based network with QPSK and 16QAM modulation schemes for both the scenarios. We observed that sliceable photonics is much more advantageous than discrete transponder optics in both metro and long-haul networks. We also compared the effect of modulation schemes on the efficiency of the network by comparing QPSK and 16QAM in discrete transponder optics and show that 16QAM in discrete transponder optics makes the network more inefficient.

Comparing networks with capacity-fixed and spectrally-fixed line modules implementing multiple coherent modulations

Onur Turkcu; Soumya Roy; Abishek Gopalan; Matthew L. Mitchell; Biao Lu

Capacity-fixed and spectrally-fixed implementations are two different line module solutions supporting multiple modulation formats. We compare both designs and show that a Capacity-fixed solution offers reduction in line module and chassis counts leading to lower network cost.
