Variation of OTN switching benefits in real-world networks based on network and traffic connectivity

Soumya Roy; Onur Turkcu; Steven Joseph Hand; Serge Melle

OTN switching enables high network efficiency and operational ease-of-use. This paper evaluates several real-world network and traffic models and concludes that OTN switching benefits are maximized more by traffic patterns rather than by physical topology.

Doing more with less: Multiple-link failure resiliency using shared mesh protection

Soumya Roy; Srivatsan Balasubramanian; Parameshwara B.V. Gowda; Sudhindra Aithal Kota

This paper investigates the practical and economic aspects of building a multiple link failure resilient optical network using ITU-T standards based shared mesh protection schemes. Our results show that practical deployments of multiple link failure resilient networks are feasible using standards based shared mesh protection at a cost typically lower than 1+1 protection scheme, while enforcing sub-SOms protection for high priority services.

A novel IPoOTN packet-optical architecture for economical and fast protection of link/IP port failures

Srivatsan Balasubramanian; Steven Joseph Hand; Pravin Mahajan; Serge Melle; Soumya Roy; Thirukumaran Velusamy; Jay Perrett; Omar Al Assil

We analyze two operationally deployable multi-layer restoration architectures for packet-optical networks that protect against port and link failures. An IPoOTN architecture using Layer 3 and Layer 1 protection mechanisms reduces IP port use by 46% compared to IPoWDM.

Comparing networks with capacity-fixed and spectrally-fixed line modules implementing multiple coherent modulations

Onur Turkcu; Soumya Roy; Abishek Gopalan; Matthew L. Mitchell; Biao Lu

Capacity-fixed and spectrally-fixed implementations are two different line module solutions supporting multiple modulation formats. We compare both designs and show that a Capacity-fixed solution offers reduction in line module and chassis counts leading to lower network cost.
