Regular exercise practice is favorably related with functional autonomy. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the physical activity level influences on the results of the Senior System for Assessment of Action Autonomy (SysSen) in elderly women. The SysSen is composed of a questionnaire (QSAP) focusing on the needs of aerobic power (AP) and upper limb strength (S) for a life perceived as autonomous, and a field test (TSMP), in which the subject walks 800m carrying pre-set loads. The QSAP provides the Expressed Autonomy Index (EAI) and the TSMP, the Potential Autonomy Index (PAI). The ratio between EAI and PAI defines the Autonomy of Action Index (PAI/EAI = AAI). An AAIof 1.0 or more characterizes the subject as independent. The subjects were either assigned to physically active (EG, n = 27) or non-active groups (NEG, n = 21), which were similar in age (NEG = 68 ± 5 vs EG = 69 ± 6 years; p = 0.56), weight (NEG = 65.7± 14.6 vs EG= 67.4± 10.1 kg; p = 0.65), and height (NEG = 1.54 ± 0.05 vs EG = 1.56 ± 0.04 m; p = 0.28). No differences were found for the EAI (NEG 73.3 ± 57.0 vs EG= 73.7± 5.1; p = 0.85) or needs related to AP and S. However, the results for AP and S in EG were higher in the items concerned with the activities daily performed (p < .05). The AAI was statistically similar across the groups (p = 0.55). In conclusion, regular exercise practice did not influence on the action autonomy as appreciated by the SysSen, probably due to a proportional increase of EAI and PAI in the active and inactive groups.

The Second Half Program (SHP) is an educational sports program running in Brazil. It began in 2003 and was one of the Olympic educational proposals described in the Rio 2016 Olympics bid. Using sport as a tool, the SHP aims to deliver moral education and to promote citizenship in order to counteract “social exclusion” and “social vulnerability”. Our analysis of official SHP documents and interviews with key actors in several SHPs reveals that the SHP illustrates the view that merely participating in sport will instill moral and Olympic values. Thus, although it represents a clear advance in government sports education policies, both its organizational methods and the lack of a clear pedagogy seem to limit the scope of the SHP to sports teaching. It thus fails to reach the broader scope that should be approached in an Olympic educational program.

The way content dimensions are treated in materials to support the curriculum has not been sufficiently analyzed yet. The aim of this study was to analyze the content of high school Physical Education teacher’s books in the state of Sao Paulo in terms of conceptual, procedural and specially attitudinal aspects. Only 50% of the contents integrated the distinct typological dimensions. Additionally, only 51.1% of the content integrated the subcategories of the attitudinal dimension. The curriculum material has important educational proposals that go beyond teaching in its technical and instrumental dimension. However, attitudinal goals need to be made more explicit, and in some teaching units, attitudinal contents do not meet all requirements needed for meaningful learning.

The article aims at identifying, describing and analyzing different strategies of Brazilian press to narrate the dispute between Brazil and Hungary in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. The analysis of articles published in newspapers O Globo and Folha de S. Paulo reveals the presence of a discussion about national character, the belief in the superiority of the “natural” characteristics of Brazilian football in comparison with Europeans’ “spirit of organization” and the Hungarian victory as a result of a European collusion. The study concludes that the press reverses the hierarchy between nature and culture, stereotyping identifications in a context of unbalanced power relations.

The objective was to analyze groups of congo in the city of Vitoria – State of Espirito Santo, regarding their structure elements, such as: body expressions, introduction of new actors and their relation with the Government. An open interview was conducted with three leaders and the analysis were guided according to categories and concepts identified in the answers of the interviewees, according to minayo (2007). The results showed that the introduction of new actors in the group caused transformation in the body expressions among these young people and their relation with the Government, which enabled the groups to acquire new body esthetics. Functions and participation of the actor role type in the analyzed groups were identified. Collectively, the body expressions do not have destination of role types, but, individually, congo reproduces it.

It seems to be possible to show how the academic discourses about Capoeira, in the field of Physical Education, reaffirm essentialized and nationalistic myths and identities. Taking it for grant, the present study aims to demonstrate how the identity narratives on Capoeira are structured by “reflective processes”. Using ethnographical methods, the identity discourses of a group of Capoeira were compared to academic discourses. We concluded that the identity narratives of Capoeira are structured by an incomplete reflexivity which reveals the process of modernization of the society and, therefore, the rebirth of the national.
