Examination of the relationship between technology use of 5–6 year-old children and their social skills and social status*

ABSTRACT The primary objective of this study is to determine the predictive effect of technology use durations of 5–6 year-old children on their social skill levels and social status. In this study, children’s technology usage is restricted to the use of television, portable computers, tablets and smartphones. The sample group of the study consisted of 162 children aged 5 and 6 years old who are actively enrolled in seven kindergartens. The data required for the study were obtained from children, parents and teachers. The ‘Determination of Use of Technology by Children–Parent Form’, the ‘Social Skills Evaluation Scale’, ‘The Picture Sociometry Scale’ and ‘The Personal Information Form’ were used. The results revealed that the use of mobile technologies had no predictive effect on the social skill level, whereas, some mobile devices have predictive effects on the social preference and social impact.

Relationship between the preschool children's attitudes towards the environment and their social status

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the social position of preschool children and their attitude towards the environment. The sample group of the survey comprised 106 children from five-to-six years age group, attending nursery classes of primary schools affiliated to Ministry of National Education, in Denizli city centre. Relational survey method was used in this study. Personal Information Form, The Childrens Attitudes toward the Environment Scale – Preschool Version, and Picture Sociometry Scale were used as data collection tools in the study. The results of the study aiming to examine the relationship between the attitudes of preschool children towards the environment and their social position suggested a positive, significant relationship between the attitudes towards the environment and the social position. It was found that the attitude of children towards the environment was the precursor of their social position.

Sayi, yuzde dagilimlari, Pearson Korelasyon, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis ve T Testleriyle veriler degerlendirilmistir. Calismaya alinan cocuklarin cinsiyete gore yemek yeme ve giyinme beceri duzeyinde anlamli bir farklilik var iken (p 0.05); oz bakim becerisi ile sosyal becerisi arasinda pozitif yonde bir iliski oldugu saptanmistir.

Examination of the effect of perspective-taking skills of six-year-old children on their social competences

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to reveal the effect of perspective-taking skills of six-year-old children on their social competences. Determined by two independent kindergartens at Yenişehir district in Mersin as study groups, 115 children (59 girls, 56 boys) in the age group of 6, constituted the study group of the study. In order to reveal the predictor effect of perspective-taking skill on level of social competence, the technique of simple linear regression analysis was used in the data analysis. According to the results, the cognitive perspective-taking skill of six-year-old children predicted variables of entering a peer group, reaction to provocation, teacher expectations, and reactive aggression in a statistically significant manner. However, the cognitive perspective-taking skill of six-year-old children did not predict variables of reaction to failure, reaction to success, social expectations, and proactive aggression in a statistically significant manner. In addition, perceptual and affective perspective-taking skills did not predict the variables of entering a peer group, reaction to provocation, reaction to failure, reaction to success, social expectations, teacher expectations, reactive aggression, and proactive aggression in a statistically significant manner.

Validity and Reliability Studies of the Turkish Version of Ladd and Profilet Child Behavior Scale, Victimization Scale, and Picture Sociometry for Four Year-Old Turkish Children

In this study, validity and reliability analysis of three data collection instruments related to children’s peer relations namely Ladd & Profilet Child Behavior Scale (CBS), Victimization Scale (VS) and Picture Sociometry Scale (PSS) has been performed considering four-year-old Turkish children. The sample of the study consisted of 300 children for CBS and VS and 166 children for PSC respectively as two groups from four-year-old age groups attending pre-school in Denizli. While analysing data, for the validity analysis of CBS, confirmatory factor analysis was performed as construct validity and the correlation between subscales was examined. For content validity, an expert was consulted. For the validity analysis of VS and PSS, content validity was carried out. In order to determine the reliability of the scales, among the internal reliability analysis methods, coefficient of internal consistency, item analysis was carried out and test-retest reliability was determined. According to the results, for four-year-old children CBS and VS are valid and reliable instruments while PSS is valid but not reliable.

INVESTIGATION OF THE SOCIAL SKILLS OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN IN THE PRESCHOOL PERIOD: THE CASE OF DENİZLİ PROVINCE

Özet: Bu araştırmada, ebeveyn-çocuk sosyal becerilerinin incelenmesi ve ebeveyn-çocuk sosyal becerilerinin çocuğun cinsiyeti, ebeveynlerin eğitim düzeyine göre farklılığının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini Denizli il merkezinde yaşayan, okul öncesi eğitime devam eden 5-6 yaş grubundan 130 çocuk, 130 anne ve 130 baba oluşturmaktadır. Bu araştırmada ebeveynlerin sosyal becerilerini ölçmek için Riggio (1986) tarafından geliştirilen, 1989 yılında revise edilen, Yüksel (1998) tarafından Türkçe’ye uyarlanan Sosyal Beceri Envanteri (SBE) ve çocuğun sosyal becerisini ölçmek için Avcıoğlu (2007) tarafından geliştirilen Sosyal Becerileri Değerlendirme Ölçeği (SBDÖ) kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda, anne ve babanın sosyal becerileri arasında olumlu yönde anlamlı bir ilişki ortaya çıkarken, annenin sosyal becerileri ile çocuğun sosyal becerileri ve babanın sosyal becerileri ile çocuğun sosyal becerileri arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunamamıştır. Bir diğer sonuç, kız çocukların erkek çocuklara göre dinleme becerileri puanlarının daha yüksek olduğudur. Ayrıca ilkokul ve üniversite mezunu annelerin çocuklarının diğer eğitim düzeyindeki annelerin çocuklarına göre kendini kontrol etme becerileri, amaç oluşturma becerileri ve sosyal beceri toplam puanlarının daha yüksek olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.
