AMANDA is a high-energy neutrino telescope presently under construction at the geographical South Pole. In the Antarctic summer 1995/96, an array of 80 optical modules (OMs) arranged on 4 strings (AMANDA-B4) was deployed at depths between 1.5 and 2 km. In this paper we describe the design and performance of the AMANDA-B4 prototype, based on data collected between February and November 1996. Monte Carlo simulations of the detector response to down-going atmospheric muon tracks show that the global behavior of the detector is understood. We describe the data analysis method and present first results on atmospheric muon reconstruction and separation of neutrino candidates. The AMANDA array was upgraded with 216 OMs on 6 new strings in 1996/97 (AMANDA-B10), and 122 additional OMs on 3 strings in 1997/98.

The ABC effect-a puzzling low-mass enhancement in the pipi invariant mass spectrum, first observed by Abashian, Booth, and Crowe-is well known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. Here we report on the first exclusive and kinematically complete measurements of the most basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn-->dpi;{0}pi;{0} at beam energies of 1.03 and 1.35 GeV. The measurements, which have been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA, reveal the ABC effect to be a (pipi)_{I=L=0} channel phenomenon associated with both a resonancelike energy dependence in the integral cross section and the formation of a DeltaDelta system in the intermediate state. A corresponding simple s-channel resonance ansatz provides a surprisingly good description of the data.

Abstract A detector setup for the cooler storage ring CELSIUS is described. The setup detects particles produced in interactions between the internal beam and a cluster-jet target. Particles emitted in the forward direction are measured by means of arrays of plastic scintillators and proportional counters. Particles, particularly photons, emitted more isotropically are measured by means of two calorimeters containing CsI(Na) crystals. The performance of the setup is given for neutral meson production in proton-proton and proton-deuteron interactions in the energy range 290–1360 MeV.

The CELSIUS-WASA setup is used to measure the 3π0 decay of η mesons produced in pp interactions with beam kinetic energies of 1.36 and 1.45 GeV. The efficiency-corrected Dalitz plot and density distributions for this decay are shown, together with a fit of the quadratic slope parameter α yielding α = −0.026 ± 0.010(stat) ± 0.010(syst). This value is compared to recent experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Abstract Low-energy spectator protons (p s ) from quasi-free proton–neutron interactions on deuterium have been measured for the pd→dπ 0 p s and pd→pnπ 0 p s reactions at the CELSIUS storage ring of the The Svedberg Laboratory. The experiment used 320 MeV protons incident on a deuterium cluster-jet target. The spectator protons were detected inside the scattering chamber using a silicon detector system which is compatible with a high vacuum. The low target density allows the spectator proton emerge without undergoing significant secondary scattering. Its measurement is therefore a useful tag upon such reactions, allowing cross-sections for quasi-free reactions to be deduced at well-defined centre-of-mass energies. The comparison with the simulation for the pd→dπ 0 p s reaction shows that the energy dependence of the pn→dπ 0 cross-section can be extracted near the threshold. The method greatly improves the experimental resolution achievable in quasi-free p–n reaction studies.

For the operation of the WASA (Wide Angle Shower Apparatus) detector system at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY in Forschungszentrum Julich (FZJ) a new DAQ system has been developed, which conforms to the third generation of the DAQ systems at COSY. This comprises new readout electronics based on an optimized parallel bus with LVDS technology and FPGA-controlled event and buffer management. The new DAQ system has been successfully commissioned in autumn 2006. Further developments aiming at performance optimizations are in progress. The implementation status is presented and performance issues are discussed.
