Hawking temperature from tunnelling formalism

P. Mitra

It has recently been suggested that the attempt to understand Hawking radiation as tunnelling across black hole horizons produces a Hawking temperature double the standard value. It is explained here how one can obtain the standard value in the same tunnelling approach.

An improved estimate of black hole entropy in the quantum geometry approach

Amit Ghosh; P. Mitra

Abstract A proper counting of states for black holes in the quantum geometry approach shows that the dominant configuration for spins are distributions that include spins exceeding one-half at the punctures. This raises the value of the Immirzi parameter and the black hole entropy. However, the coefficient of the logarithmic correction remains − 1 / 2 as before.

Noncommutative oscillators and the commutative limit

B. Muthukumar; P. Mitra

It is shown in first order perturbation theory that anharmonic oscillators in non-commutative space behave smoothly in the commutative limit just as harmonic oscillators do. The non-commutativity provides a method for converting a problem in degenerate perturbation theory to a non-degenerate problem.

Entropy for extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes

Amit Ghosh; P. Mitra

Abstract We find in the brick wall model that the entropy of scalar matter in an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom background does not vanish and in fact has a stronger divergence than usual. We also interpret earlier results on the classical action of these black holes to argue that the mass may be a measure of the gravitational entropy, somewhat like in string models.
