Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been identified as the main psychiatric disorder associated with violence. This paper had the objective of identifying and organizing current scientific knowledge on long term effects on bullying and the development of PTSD. Thus, a literature review was conducted involving published books and papers on the topic, as well as an electronic database survey. Although studies indicate a relation between PTSD and bullying during childhood and later, there is a lack of research clarifying how this relationship occurs. There is evidence showing that some individuals who are victimized by bullying may present greater vulnerability to develop PTSD.

Homophobia may be present at schools in several ways, involving multiple school agents, and favoring the development of many psychological and psychiatric symptoms by victims. This study aimed to describe university students retrospective reports on their worst school experiences motivated by homophobia, identifying their duration, main perpetrators involved, and symptoms resulting from these experiences. Among the 638 participants who answered the “Student Alienation and Trauma Survey – R” for a larger Brazilian study on school victimization, 21 (3.3%) reported homophobic components in their worst experience. The reports describe mainly verbal victimization and also social isolation situations, and for 14 students the experience lasted for “years”. A literatura indica a existencia de danos para a saude mental de estudantes em casos de violencia no contexto escolar. O objetivo deste estudo retrospectivo foi avaliar o impacto psicologico da vitimizacao escolar em estudantes universitarios e analisar a associacao dos sintomas de TEPT com variaveis relacionadas a vitimizacao. No total, 691 estudantes universitarios responderam a Escala sobre Experiencias Traumaticas em Estudantes. Escores clinicamente significativos nas subescalas variaram de 4,7% (sintomas somaticos) a 20% (hipervigilância), sendo frequentes sintomas descritos na literatura resultantes de vitimizacao, como: depressao, desesperanca, dificuldades cognitivas e rememoracao do evento traumatico. Adicionalmente, 7,8% apresentaram sintomas de TEPT apos a sua pior experiencia escolar. Foram encontradas associacoes entre os sintomas de TEPT e o incomodo sentido apos a experiencia, beneficios percebidos apos o evento e duracao do mesmo. Tais dados indicam o potencial nocivo das experiencias de vitimizacao escolar, podendo contribuir para futuras pesquisas em tal area.

The literature has indicated that school victimization might favor the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, few studies have shown which variables are important in this process. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between explanatory variables (individual characteristics and aversive school experiences), and the development of PTSD symptoms, using an ordinal logistic regression model. To this end, 691 students of a public university situated in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with a mean age of 21.1 years responded to a Brazilian version of the retrospective instrument Student Alienation and Trauma Survey–R (SATS–R). Significant variables for the regression model were age, duration of the worst school experience and subsequent discomfort, and relational and verbal violence victimization. In general, the greater the discomfort experienced by the student, the longer the duration of the worst school experience, the older the student and the more verbal and relational victimization episodes experienced, the greater the possibility of displaying clinically significant symptoms of PTSD.
