principles systems and applications of ip telecommunications | 2008

The scope of telephony is significantly broadening, providing users with a variety of communication modes, including presence status, instant messaging and videoconferencing. Furthermore, telephony is being increasingly combined with a number of non-telephony, heterogeneous resources, consisting of software entities, such as Web services, and hardware entities, such as location-tracking devices. This heterogeneity, compounded with the intricacies of underlying technologies, make the programming of new telephony applications a daunting task. This paper proposes an approach to supporting the development of advanced telephony applications. We introduce a declarative language to define the entities of a target telephony application area. This definition is passed to a generator to produce a Java programming framework, dedicated to the application area. The generated frameworks provide service discovery and high-level communication mechanisms. These mechanisms are automatically mapped into SIP, making our approach compatible with existing SIP infrastructures and entities. Our work has been validated on various advanced telephony applications.

This paper describes a methodology and a programming support that use the SIP protocol as a universal communication bus in pervasive computing environments. In doing so, our work enables homogeneous communications between heterogeneous distributed entities. We present a classification of a wide variety of entities in terms of features, capabilities and network connectors. Based on this classification, a methodology and a programming support are described for connecting entities on the SIP communication bus. This work has been validated by applications using the SIP communication bus to coordinate widely varying entities, including serial-based sensors (RS232, 1-Wire), ZigBee devices, X10 devices, PDA, native SIP entities, and software components.

SIP has demonstrated its effectiveness in enabling distributed entities to exchange any media using various interaction modes. In doing so, this protocol is showing great promise to support much extended forms of telecommunication services. This paper reports on the use of SIP as a communication middleware to support home automation applications that consist of heterogeneous, distributed entities. We describe how SIP fulfills the requirements of home automation; we present the resulting architecture of a home automation system; and, we validate our approach with various scenarios.

This paper proposes an original new way for integrating training of advanced measurement equipment in education at University level. It uses some of the WWW features such as the ability to have multimedia documents, the simplicity of the HTLM syntax and particularly the Webs networked structure. The basic idea is, that on the one side there is an instrumentation pool, that means a number of instruments located anywhere in the world. On the other side a detailed description of the instrument and its front panel are available on the WEB and can be accessed by any Web browser for a specific declared users group. This link permits students to learn the use of advanced measurement equipment, to perform real measurements with instruments not available at the University.

The paper proposes an original new way for integrating training of advanced measurement equipment in continuing education for students or engineers. It uses some of the WWW features such as the ability to have multimedia documents, the simplicity of the HTML syntax and particularly the Webs networked structure. The basic idea is that on the one side there is an instrumentation pool (i.e., a number of instruments located anywhere in the world). On the other side a detailed description of the instrument and its front panel are available on the Web and can be accessed by any Web browser for a specific declared users group. This link permits students or engineers to learn the use of advanced measurement equipment, and to perform real measurements with instruments not available at the university.
