CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE Kaposis sarcoma (KS) is a common neoplastic disease in AIDS patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, with or without KS manifestations and correlate HHV-8 detection with KS staging. DESIGN AND SETTING Analytic cross-sectional study conducted in a public tertiary-level university hospital in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS Antibodies against HHV-8 lytic-phase antigens were detected by means of the immunofluorescence assay. HHV-8 DNA was detected in the patient samples through a nested polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR) that amplified a region of open reading frame (ORF)-26 of HHV-8. RESULTS Anti-HHV-8 antibodies were detected in 30% of non-KS patients and 100% of patients with KS. Furthermore, the HHV-8 DNA detection rates observed in HIV-positive patients with KS were 42.8% in serum, 95.4% in blood samples and 100% in skin biopsies; and in patients without KS, the detection rate was 4% in serum. Out of the 16 serum samples from patients with KS-AIDS who were classified as stage II, two were positive (12.5%); and out of the 33 samples from patients in stage IV, 19 (57.6%) were positive. CONCLUSION We observed an association between HHV-8 detection and disease staging, which was higher in the serum of patients in stage IV. This suggests that detection of HHV-8 DNA in serum could be very useful for clinical assessment of patients with KS and for monitoring disease progression.

Metodo Revisao sistematica realizada nas fontes eletronicas bibliograficas BVS/Lilacs, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, PubMed, SCOPUS e Web of Science, utilizando a combinacao de descritores, palavras-chave e termos livres. Objective To verify the effect of bathing on the body temperature of preterm infants (PTI). Method Systematic review conducted in the following bibliographic electronic sources: Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde/Lilacs (BVS), Cumulated Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science, using a combination of search terms, keywords and free terms. The review question was adjusted to the PICO acronym (Patient/population, Intervention, Control/comparative intervention, Outcome). The selected publications were evaluated according to levels of evidence and grades of recommendation for efficacy/effectiveness studies, as established by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Results Eight hundred and twenty four (824) publications were identified and four studies met the inclusion criteria, of which three analyzed the effect of sponge baths and the effect of immersion baths. Conclusion Sponge baths showed a statistically significant drop in body temperature, while in immersion baths the body temperature remained stable, although they studied late preterm infants.

Some maternal factors associated with neonatal hypoglycemia justify monitoring blood glucose levels in the first 24 hours of life. The objective of this study was to describe the socio-demographic and obstetric characteristics of mothers to newborns undergoing capillary blood glucose control in the first 24 hours of life, hospitalized in a rooming-in maternity ward of a Baby Friendly Hospital. This is a descriptive exploratory study which involved the analysis of data from 380 medical records of mothers hospitalized from July to December, 2006 at the maternity ward of the University of São Paulo Teaching Hospital. It was found that 18 (5.6%) mothers developed gestational diabetes, none of them were treated with oral hypoglycemic agents, 53 (16.2%) had hypertension during pregnancy and 17 (32.1%) used anti-hypertensive medication, 215 (56.6%) received glucose 5% continuous infusion during labor and delivery. Correlation studies linking maternal variables and neonatal hypoglycemia are needed to identify the predicting factors of this neonatal morbidity.

Knowledge about HIV/AIDS on women’s health: a descriptive study with undergraduates

Neide de Souza Praça; Patrícia de Freitas; Amélia Fumiko Kimura

Aim: to verify the information and knowledge about HIV/AIDS on womens health of students enrolled in the nursing undergraduate course at a public university of Sao Paulo state, Brazil. Method: This is a descriptive study, initially assessing 56 nursing students studying Women’s Health during the academic year of 1998/99. A further 51 students were assessed during 2010. The data was collected via a questionnaire, filled in by the students before a class regarding HIV/AIDS and women. This project was approved by the Ethics in Research Committee and by the Research Commission of the institution. Results: A decrease in the degree of the student’s knowledge was observed in 2010 in comparison to 1998/9. On the other hand, the 2010 respondents answered more questions regarding vertical transmission of the virus/disease correctly. Conclusions: This study suggests that changing teaching strategies to include activities in the field, allowing early contact between students and clientele may be beneficial.
