Characterization of users at risk of developing diabetes: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE To characterize the profile of users at risk of developing diabetes mellitus type 2 according to sociodemographic and clinical variables. METHOD Cross-sectional study, descriptive, quantitative approach conducted with 266 users of Basic Care. Inferential statistics analysis, calculating the crude prevalence ratio with confidence interval of 95% and Kruskal-Wallis test, and application of the multivariate technique simple Correspondence Analysis. RESULTS It was noted that 83.1% were women and 36.4% frequented the Family Health Unit from 1 to 5 years. Regarding the factors associated with diabetes mellitus type 2, 66.5% of the users were overweight and 77.9% were rated with central obesity. The great majority, 77.4%, did not practice physical activities and 21.1% had altered glycemia. CONCLUSION The results showed that many risk factors for developing diabetes mellitus type 2 were among the population of the study.

Evaluación nutricional por el Mini Nutritional Assessment: una herramienta para las enfermeras

Objective: To characterize the nutritional status of institutionalized aged individuals according to the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA®). Method: Cross-sectional, population-based study of quantitative approach, performed with 321 elderly residents in long term care facilities of Joao Pessoa/PB. This study was approved by the Committee on Ethics in Research of CCS/UFPB, CAEE: 02043712.4.0000.5188. Results: The mean age of participants was 81.09 years old and the majority of them were female (75.7%). Firstly, the elderly were evaluated by a screening, in which 86 (26.8%) had adequate nutritional status and 235 (73.2%) passed to the overall assessment; seven (3.0%) of these had adequate nutritional status. Therefore, the total amount of elderly with adequate nutritional status, according to MNA®, was 93 (29.0%); 127 (39.6%) of them were at risk of malnutrition and 101 (31.5%) were malnourished. Conclusion: It is essential to establish prevention programs in long-term institutions that subsidize the activities of the multidisciplinary health team, in order to control risk factors, including nutritional parameters.

Nursing In The Pre And Postoperative Of Bariatric Surgery

Objective: To describe the studies disseminated in online journals about the nursing care in the pre- and post-operative bariatric surgery. Method: This is an integrative review of literature, a method that aims to gather and synthesize results of research about a topic. We conducted a survey of 405 articles, which, after passing by the inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulted in 8 scientific productions for analysis. Results: The selected publications were divided into two thematic categories: Nursing care for the patient undergoing bariatric surgery and systematization of nursing care for patients under bariatric surgery. Conclusion: The analysis of these studies evidences the importance of the nurse as an active member of the health team and essential in the whole process of bariatric surgery that the patient undergoes. It was also seen that the systematization of nursing care is determinant for a good recovery of these patients. Descriptors: Bariatric Surgery; Nursing Care; Obesity; Morbid Obesity.

Characterization of People with Diabetes Mellitus Assisted in an Outpatient Follow-up Clinic

Objective: To characterize the profile of people with diabetes, according to sociodemographic, clinical and laboratory variables. Method: Cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted with 110 people with diabetes mellitus treated at outpatient follow-up of a teaching hospital in Joao Pessoa - PB, Brazil, during February-June 2015. To collect data, we used a form contemplating sociodemographic, clinical and laboratory variables. For the analysis, we used descriptive statistics often measures for categorical variables, mean and standard deviation for numeric variables. Results: The study revealed that the socio-demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics increase the risk of morbidity and mortality for people studied, as well as being impediments to the realization of self-care. Conclusion: The importance of achieving education for self-care was evident, for many of these identified factors can be modified when the person with diabetes has knowledge about their health-disease process, promoting positive attitudes in their care.

Reproductive rights of women: reflecting attitudes and practices in a public hospital

The disregard and disrespect for sexual and reproductive rights allow for the imposition of norms and derogatory values by some health professionals. In view of this, the objective of this study was to investigate the perception of health professionals involved in care for women about the reproductive rights of women during the antepartum, childbirth and the puerperium in a Public Maternity Hospital of Joao Pessoa - PB. A descriptive study of qualitative approach performed with 42 professionals from a public maternity hospital. The content analysis resulted in two categories, the first with three sub-categories and the second with two subcategories. Through this study showed that women are more exposed to the model of technocratic assistance, which reinforces the loss of their role during the whole perinatal stage, being therefore necessary actions more effective for quality assistance and humanization. Nurses and the use of collagenase in the treatment of chronic wounds

Objective: The objective was to verify the skill of nurses about the use of collagenase in the treatment of chronic wounds. Method: A descriptive study of a qualitative approach performed with medical clinic nurses from two hospitals. The data were collected processed using the content analysis technique. Results: Worked categories: 1. Knowledge about the mechanism of action of collagenase in the treatment of chronic wounds; 2. Reasons for use and destruction of collagenase in the treatment of chronic wounds. Conclusion: The study showed that nurses have knowledge that collagenase is a debriding enzyme that aids in the healing process, particularly by removing the necrotic tissue in wounds; however, there is still the need to improve the relevant knowledge concerning the use of this substance in dressings made in their chronic lesions, even in view of the apparent lack of knowledge about the relevant enzyme peculiarities, such as its mechanism of action. Risk Factors for Type II Diabetes Mellitus: an Integrative Review

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the evidence available in the literature on the factors of risk for type II diabetes mellitus. Method: There was an integrative review of the literature in the following databases: PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and Scopus, using the descriptors type II diabetes mellitus and factors of risk in Portuguese and English. The research returned 504 articles from 2006 to 2016. After inclusion and exclusion criteria, one obtained 14 studies, which compose the study sample. Results: Of the studies included in the review, 21.4% were in 2011 and 2015. Regarding the method, 57.0%, were cross-sectional studies. The prevalent qualis was the category A. In all studies, there were factors of risk for T2DM. Conclusion: By analyzing the studies, it was possible to identify a wide range of factors of risk found in the literature, showing what can favor the development of the disease and the possible means to build preventive and promotional strategies for groups prone to develop that problem.
