INTRODUCTION: Several studies have evaluated the therapeutic benefits of plants. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts of pepper tree (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi), aroeira (Astronium urundeuva [Fr. All.] Engl.), Olacaceae (Ximenia americana L.), quixaba (Syderoxylum obtusifolium [Roem et Schult.]), and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl 2.5%) against Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212). METHODS: The agar diffusion test was performed and 0.12% chlorhexidine was applied as positive control. The microorganisms were allowed to grow in a brain-heart infusion broth (BHI) and incubated at 37oC for 24 hours. Subsequently, the microbial suspensions were seeded on Petri dishes containing Mueller Hinton agar, and six equidistant wells were made. The plates were kept at room temperature for 2 hours for the pre-diffusion of substances, and incubated at 37oC for 48 hours. The analysis and measurement of inhibition zones were performed in triplicate, and the results were statistically analyzed (ANOVA test). RESULTS: Quixaba produced the smallest inhibition zones (t test, p < 0.05). On the other hand, 0.12% chlorhexidine, herbal extracts of pepper tree and aroeira at 100% concentration induced larger inhibition zones in comparison with 2.5% NaOCl, with statistically significant difference (t test, p < 0.05). At all concentrations, both pepper tree and aroeira showed a higher inhibition zone against Enterococcus faecalis in comparison with the other plant extracts tested. CONCLUSION: All the substances analyzed showed antimicrobial activity against E. faecalis. Therefore , they may represent alternative substances in endodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a potentially malignant disorder of the lip caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical, demographic, morphological and therapeutic management in AC cases data associating to the histopathological grading. METHODS Demographic, clinical and management data of 161 patients with AC were analyzed. In biopsied cases, two calibrated examiners performed histopathological grading by binary system. RESULTS There was a prevalence of males (79.5%), aged 40 years or older (77.5%), light-skinned (85.7%), experiencing occupational exposure to sunlight (80.3%), with AC presenting clinically as white lesions (33.6%). Conservative treatment was adopted in 78 cases and biopsy in 83 cases (60.2% graded as low-risk AC). There were no significant associations between histopathological grading and gender (p= 0.509), age (p=0.416), ethnicity (p=0.388), occupational exposure to sunlight (p=1.000) or clinical presentation (p=0.803). CONCLUSION This study reinforces the hypothesis that demographic and clinical characteristics of AC are not related to histopathological grading. Advice on protection from sun exposure should be encouraged to avoid progression of AC and invasive therapies.

Objective To conduct a retrospective study on a series of cases of PV and BMMP with manifestations in the oral cavity in order to ascertain prevalence, sociodemographic characteristics, diagnostic maneuvers, treatment and follow-up. Methods This is a retrospective, descriptive study in which clinical data were collected from the medical records of all cases of PV and BMMP registered and diagnosed, between 1995 and 2015, in the Oral Diagnostic Service of the UFRN Department of Dentistry. Results The mean age of the total sample (n = 36) was 41.64, with females the most frequent (n = 26; 72.22%) and the cheek mucosa being the site most affected (n = 20; 27.40%). Eight patients (22.22%), including 5 cases of PV and 3 BMMP, were clinically reevaluated. All patients exhibited lesions at the time of follow-up. Prednisone (n=7; 87.5%) and clobetasol propionate (n=8, 100%) were the most widely used drugs in the systemic and topical treatment, respectively. The follow-up period ranged from 5 months to 5 years. Conclusion The clinical profile of patients in this study was similar to that evidenced in the literature. However, it was found that the oral lesions were more resistant to the treatment used on the patients evaluated. Indexing terms: Benign membrane mucous pemphigoid. Oral diagnosis. Pemphigus. Vesiculobullous skin diseases.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and associated factors of carotid artery calcification (CAC) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. STUDY DESIGN A total of 309 panoramic radiographs of patients with CKD (180 men and 129 women; mean age 43.7 years) undergoing hemodialysis were evaluated by a single radiologist to determine the frequency of CAC. An analysis of associated factors, such as age, sex, time spent in hemodialysis, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, biochemical parameters, and other systemic diseases, was also performed. RESULTS The presence of CAC in patients with CKD, as determined on the basis of panoramic radiography, was 15.9%. The χ2 test revealed that there was a statistically significant association between certain factors, such as age, sex, and diabetes mellitus, and the presence of CAC (P < .05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that time spent in hemodialysis was significantly associated with the occurrence of CAC. CONCLUSIONS A significant presence of CAC was detected on digital panoramic radiographs in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Calcification was more frequent in older patients, women, individuals with diabetes mellitus, and patients who had undergone hemodialysis for longer periods.

Luiz Arthur Barbosa da Silva; Rodrigo Porpino Mafra; Patrícia Teixeira de Oliveira; Ana Miryam Costa de Medeiros; Leão Pereira Pinto; Éricka Janine Dantas da Silveira

Laugier-Hunziker syndrome (LHS) is a rare mucocutaneous disorder, of unknown etiology, characterized by multiple hyperpigmented macules, dispersed mostly on the oral mucosa, occasionally associated with longitudinal ridging of the nails. The diagnosis requires exclusion of other conditions, such as Addison’s disease and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. We report a case of a 34-year-old male patient, presenting with hyperpigmented macules on the lips, buccal mucosa and palate, as well as mild dark striations on toenails. After careful clinical and laboratorial investigations, the diagnosis of LHS was established. Given the lack of aesthetic complaints and symptoms, no treatment was necessary.

BACKGROUND Recurrent aphthous ulcerations are common benign ulcerated lesions on the mouth, whose etiology is poorly understood, with controversial treatment and difficult to control in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the cases of recurrent aphthous ulcerations with a focus on treatment, diagnosis and etiology. METHODS This is a retrospective study of the cases of the Oral Diagnosis service of the Rio Grande do Norte Federal University in Natal/RN. Data such as sex, age, race, location, smoking habits, types of treatment, relapsing episodes, laboratory test results and clinical characteristics were collected. The associations between the variables were analyzed using the Pearson Chi-square test (p <0.05). RESULTS A total of 4895 patients were seen in the service over a period of 11 years. Of these, 161 (3.3%) had complaints of oral aphthous ulcerations, of which 76 (47.2%) were diagnosed as suffering from recurrent aphthous ulcerations and 68 (42.2%) with clinical information necessary for evaluation. The tongue was the most affected anatomical region, with 27 individuals (39.7%), followed by the buccal mucosa, with 22 cases (32.3%). STUDY LIMITATIONS Retrospective study with data from medical records. CONCLUSION Dental surgeons, dermatologists and otorhinolaryngologists are the main responsible for the first contact with patients with this disease and should be attentive to the clinical aspects and treat each patient in an individualized way, since the therapy is palliative, its diagnosis is by exclusion and its etiology is unknown.BACKGROUND Recurrent aphthous ulcerations are common benign ulcerated lesions on the mouth, whose etiology is poorly understood, with controversial treatment and difficult to control in clinical practice. Elizandra Silva da Penha; Rogério Lacerda-Santos; Maria Goretti Freire de Carvalho; Patrícia Teixeira de Oliveira

The focus of this double‐blind randomized study was on evaluating the effect of an aqueous extract of Mastruz (Chenopodium ambrosioides L.) on the bone repair process in vivo. In total, 36 male Wistar rats were randomly selected for this study, and divided into 3 groups (n = 12): Group HS (Hemostatic Sponge), Group SM (Hemostatic Sponge with Mastruz) and Group BC (Blood Clot). In each animal, bone defects measuring 2 mm in diameter were performed in both tibias for placement of the substances. After 3 and 10 days, the animals were sacrificed, and the tissues were analyzed under an optical microscope relative to the following events: inflammatory infiltrate; necrosis; young fibroblasts; osteoclastic and osteoblastic activity; endosteal and periosteal bone formation; and bone repair. The results were assessed by using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests (p < .05). Inflammatory infiltrate demonstrated difference between Groups SM and BC in the time interval of 3 days (p = .004); an event related to the presence of the fibrin sponge and liquid of the extract, which induced a foreign body initial reaction. The presence of young fibroblasts (p = .003), osteoclastic (p = .003), and osteoblastic (p = .020) activity was statistically significant between Groups HS and BC in the time interval of 10 days; performance was related to the presence of the sponge within bone. As regards injured bone tissue repair, Group SM demonstrated a higher level of regenerative capacity (p = 0.004), due to a larger quantities of endosteal and periosteal bone formation, demonstrated in Group SM. The aqueous extract of mastruz stimulated bone neoformation, presenting wound closure with bone tissue at the end of 10 days.
