Manganese (Mn2+) toxicity or UV-B radiation and their individual effects on plants have been documented previously. However, no study about the combined effect of these stresses is available. We evaluated the individual and combined effects of excess Mn2+ and UV-B radiation on physiological and biochemical parameters in two highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cultivars differing in resistance to Mn toxicity (Brigitta (resistant) and Bluegold (sensitive)). Plants grown in Hoagland nutrient solution were subjected to the following treatments: 2µM MnCl2 (control), 500µM MnCl2 (toxic Mn2+), UV-B radiation (a daily dose of 94.4kJm-2), and the combined treatment (toxic Mn2++UV-B) for 30 days. In both cultivars, the Mn2++UV-B treatment caused a more negative effect on net photosynthesis (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), the photochemical parameters of PSII and the chl a/b ratio than the treatments with toxic Mn2+ or UV-B alone. However, Brigitta showed also a better acclimation response in Pn and gs than Bluegold at the end of the experiment. The Mn2++UV-B treatment inhibited growth, enhanced radical scavenging activity and superoxide dismutase activity, and increased the concentration of total UV-absorbing compounds, phenols and anthocyanins, mainly in Bluegold. In conclusion, Mn-resistant Brigitta showed a better acclimation response and greater resistance to the combined stress of Mn2+ toxicity and UV-B exposure than the Mn-sensitive Bluegold. An increased concentration of photoprotective compounds and enhanced resistance to oxidative stress in Brigitta could underpin increased resistance to the combined stress.

The zooplankton assemblages in deep, mostly oligotrophic northern Patagonian lakes are characterized by low species numbers and a marked dominance of calanoid copepods. In the present study, data collected in field work on six water bodies located in Alerce Andino National Park (41°S) were analysed using the Jaccard Index of community similarity and a co-occurrence of null models, and such with the aim of determining potential regulating factors for the observed crustacean assemblages, using a presence-absence matrix. A significant correlation between species number and surface area was found. The null model used species co-occurrence, and the basis of this model is that the species associations observed are random. The results revealed the absence of regulating factors and indicate that the sites are relatively homogeneous, with low species numbers and similar plankton assemblages at all studied sites. This finding is in accordance with similar descriptions for zooplankton assemblages in other Chilean Patagonian lakes.

Despite the Montreal protocol and the eventual recovery of the ozone layer over Antarctica, there are still concerns about increased levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation in the Southern Hemisphere. UV-B induces physiological, biochemical and morphological stress responses in plants, which are species-specific and different even for closely related cultivars. In woody plant species, understanding of long-term mechanisms to cope with UV-B-induced stress is limited. Therefore, a greenhouse UV-B daily course simulation was performed for 21 days with two blueberry cultivars (Legacy and Bluegold) under UV-BBE irradiance doses of 0, 0.07 and 0.19 W m-2 . Morphological changes, photosynthetic performance, antioxidants, lipid peroxidation and metabolic features were evaluated. We found that both cultivars behaved differently under UV-B exposure, with Legacy being a UV-B-resistant cultivar. Interestingly, Legacy used a combined strategy: initially, in the first week of exposure its photoprotective compounds increased, coping with the intake of UV-B radiation (avoidance strategy), and then, increasing its antioxidant capacity. These strategies proved to be UV-B radiation dose dependent. The avoidance strategy is triggered early under high UV-B radiation in Legacy. Moreover, the rapid metabolic reprogramming capacity of this cultivar, in contrast to Bluegold, seems to be the most relevant contribution to its UV-B stress-coping strategy.

The fauna communities of ephemeral pools in southern Chile are characterized by heterogeneity of crustacean taxa; nevertheless, no detailed studies exist of their community structure. The aim of the present study was to analyze the crustacean community structure in two groups of ephemeral pools (Puaucho and Nigue pools) in the coastal zone of the Araucanía region. A correlation matrix was made by species abundance against temperature, conductivity, pH and total dissolved solids. In a second step, a null model for species co-occurrence was applied to the total data and to each group. The results for total data revealed a significant direct relation between the abundance of H. costera, C. dubia and Mesocyclops. For the Puaucho pools, the same results were found together with direct associations with total dissolved solids, conductivity and pH. Finally, different results were found for the Nigue pools, with no clear significant associations, either direct or indirect, between the abundance of different crustacean taxa and abiotic parameters. These results were supported by the co-occurrence null model analysis, which revealed the presence of regulator factors for the total data, and for each of the two groups. Ecological topics are discussed with emphasis on meta-community dynamics.

The effects of a long-term simulated spring-summer UV-B daily course on some anatomical, physiological, and biochemical features were studied in new and old leaves of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cultivars Legacy, Brigitta, and Bluegold. The results show that under UV-B exposure, leaf thickness increased in Bluegold due to an increased intercellular cavities. By contrast, Brigitta maintained its leaf thickness. The net photosynthetic rate was not significantly affected by the UV-B radiation in any of the cultivars; however, Brigitta presented a better photosystem II performance, since this cultivar had more efficient photochemistry under the UV-B radiation. In addition, Brigitta also maintained enhanced total phenol and total anthocyanin content compared to the other cultivars. In conclusion, Brigitta was more resistant to the UV-B radiation than the other two cultivars.

The Chilean Patagonia has numerous kinds of inland water ecosystems such as lakes, ponds, wetlands and rivers that have been poorly studied due to access difficulties. This study was carried out in Aysen region, in southern Chile, and it included different kinds of water bodies such as rivers, streams, ponds, lagoons and lakes distributed along an altitudinal gradient at 46° S. It was found a low species number, essentially cladocerans, copepods and amphipods. A null model was applied in order to determine the existence of regulator factors of species associations, and the results revealed that they are not random. The patterns would be influenced by geographical and limnological characteristics of the studied sites. Our results would agree with regional studies on habitat heterogeneity such as in Torres del Paine National Park and other zones in Tierra del Fuego island.

The Llanquihue lake is included in the called Araucanian or Nord Patagonian lakes located between 38-41° S. These lakes are characterized by their oligo-mesotrophic status due to human intervention which takes to the increase in nutrients inputs from industries and towns. Effects on zooplankton assemblages are observed with marked increase of daphnids abundance. The aim of the present study is to analyze the trophic status and zooplankton relative abundance in different bays of Llanquihue lake. It was found direct associations between chlorophyll a with daphnids percentage, total dissolved nitrogen with reactive soluble phosphorus nitrogen/phosphorus molar radio with cyclopoids percentage, and an inverse relation between daphnids and calanoids percentages. The occurrence of three kinds of microcrustacean assemblages and environmental conditions was evidenced: the first one with high calanoids percentage, low species number and low chlorophyll and nutrients concentration, a second with moderate chlorophyll and nutrients concentration and moderate daphnids percentage; high species number and a third site with high chlorophyll and nutrients concentration, high daphnids percentage and high species number. Daphnids increase under mesotrophic status, agree with similar results observed for southern Argentinean and New Zealand lakes.

El zooplancton lacustre chileno se caracteriza por un alto predominio de copepodos calanoideos y bajo numero de especies, lo que esta asociado principalmente a condiciones de oligotrofia. El presente estudio es una primera descripcion de la comunidad de crustaceos zooplanctonicos y litorales en lagunas temporales en la zona costera de Puaucho mediante el uso de modelos nulos de co-ocurrencia de especies y sobreposicion de nicho. Los resultados del modelo de co-ocurrencia de especies indican que las asociaciones de estas son aleatorias, mientras que el analisis de sobreposicion de nicho indica estos no se sobreponen. Los resultados concordarian con descripciones similares para lagos de la Patagonia de Argentina y Chile.

The community of crustacean zooplankton in lakes can show temporal vertical variations in composition and abundance due to the influence of exposure to natural ultraviolet radiation. The aim of the present study was to analyse the zooplankton composition both at the surface and in the water column, and at different times during the day and night, in a northern Patagonian mountain lake (Lake Tinquilco, 39°S, 763 m a.s.l.) in Chile. Eight samples were collected in two days: four samples between the surface and 5 m depth, and four between the surface and 20 m depth. Based on these data, the corresponding values of the Shannon diversity index were estimated. In samples collected at 0-5 m depth, low species numbers were found in comparison with samples collected at 0-20 m. At 0-5 m, the highest biodiversity was observed in the evening, whereas at 0-20 m depth the highest biodiversity was observed in the morning and early afternoon. As a possible cause for this variation, the exposure to natural ultraviolet radiation would be the most probable, since that harmful radiation can penetrate into the superficial part of the water column.
