Chemosyndromes in the lichen genus Teloschistes (Teloschistaceae, Lecanorales)

Ulrik Søchting; Patrik Frödén

The secondary metabolites of 150 specimens belonging to 29 species of Teloschistes were analysed with HPLC. Seven anthraquinones were detected of which parietin dominated with minor proportions of emodin, teloschistin, fallacinal and parietinic acid. The depsidones vicanicin, caloploicin, and isofulgidin occurred together with some compounds of unknown identity in varying proportions in T. flavicans, T. peruensis, T. stellatus, and one unnamed taxon. Nine chemosyndromes were found in the genus. Most species had only one chemosyndrome, but T. flavicans s. lat. had six syndromes. The geographical distribution patterns of these chemosyndromes in T. flavicans are discussed as well as the applicability of chemical characters for species delimitation in Teloschistes.

Typification and emendation of Seirophora Poelt to include species segregated from Teloschistes Norman

Patrik Frödén; Per Lassen

The type material of Physcia magara Kremp., which is the type species of Seirophora Poelt (Teloschistaceae), is shown to be heterogeneous. It is a mixture of Teloschistes villosus (Ach.) Norman and Ramalina maciformis (Delile) Bory. Physcia magara Kremp. is typified on the T. villosus-part. Teloschistes species with multiseriate hairs, spores with short septa, thick and strongly conglutinated cortex hyphae with thick walls, lacking cilia or rhizines, and which have a mainly northern hemispheric distribution, are transferred to Seirophora. The following new combinations are made: Seirophora aurantiaca (R. Br.) Froden, Seirophora austroarabica (Sipman) Froden, Seirophora californica (Sipman) Froden, Seirophora contortuplicata (Ach.) Froden, Seirophora lacunosa (Rupr.) Froden, Seirophora scorigena (Mont.) Froden, Seirophora stenophylla (Tav.) Froden, and Seirophora villosa (Ach.) Froden. (Less)

Two new species of Caloplaca (Teloschistaceae) from the southern hemisphere

Ingvar Kärnefelt; Sergey Y. Kondratyuk; Ulrik Søchting; Patrik Frödén; Ulf Arup

Abstract Caloplaca gyalectoides S. Kondratyuk & Kärnefelt from the Cape Province, South Africa, and Caloplaca chilensis S. Kondratyuk, Kärnefelt, Frödén & Arup with an associated parasymbiont Arthonia tetraspora S. Kondratyuk & Kärnefelt occurring mainly along the coast in central Chile are described as new. Possible associated taxa are briefly discussed. Distribution maps are provided for all three species.

Charcotiana and Amundsenia, two new genera in Teloschistaceae (lichenized Ascomycota, subfamily Xanthorioideae) hosting two new species from continental Antarctica, and Austroplaca frigida, a new name for a continental Antarctic species

Ulrik Søchting; Isaac Garrido-Benavent; Rod Seppelt; Miris Castello; Sergio Pérez-Ortega; Asunción de los Ríos Murillo; Leopoldo G. Sancho; Patrik Frödén; Ulf Arup

Based on a combined three locus analysis two new genera, Charcotiana and Amundsenia, are proposed in the lichen family Teloschistaceae, subfamily Xanthorioideae. Charcotiana includes the new species C. antarctica, which is known only from continental Antarctica. The bipolar genus Amundsenia includes the new species A. austrocontinentalis, which is also known only from continental Antarctica, and the Arctic species Caloplaca approximata which is here combined into the new genus. The two new genera are phylogenetically distinct, but poor in morphological characters; the new species consist mainly of minute apothecia in cracks of rocks located in the climatically harshest regions of the Antarctic. They are somewhat similar to another continental Antarctic species, Austroplaca frigida, which is described as a new name based on the illegitimate name Caloplaca frigida Sochting. The distribution of the four species is mapped. (Less)

A monopgraph of the genus Placomaronea

Martin Westberg; Patrik Frödén; Mats Wedin

A monograph of the genus Placomaronea is presented; all species described earlier are revised, a total of six species is recognized, and an identification key is presented. In addition to the three previously known species, P. candelarioides, P. lambii and P. mendozae, three new species are described: Placomaronea kaernefeltii is a large rosette-like species known from one locality in northernmost Chile; Placomaronea fuegiana is a bullate, areolate species described from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina; Placomaronea minima is a small, areolate to minutely lobate species described from Chile and Argentina, and is the first species of Placomaronea to be reported from the African continent. In a phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ITS rDNA, Placomaronea is shown to form a monophyletic group within the Candelariales. (Less)

Josefpoeltia parva, a new combination in Josefpoeltia (Teloschistaceae)

Patrik Frödén; Louise Lindblom

Abstract The new combination, Josefpoeltia parva (Räs.) Frödén & L. Lindblom with the basionym Xanthoria parva Räs., is made. The type species of Josefpoeltia, J. boliviensis, is reduced to synonymy with J. parva. The length of the conidia varies in J. parva showing a north-south gradient.
