Is the Male-Provider Model Still in Place? Partnership Formation in Contemporary Spain

In this article, we examine the influence of some explanatory variables related to educational attainment and labour-market position for males and females on the hazard rates of entry into a first partnership in two historical periods in contemporary Spain. Our goal is to highlight the causes of the present low level of first unions in Spain and to assess different approaches to the interpretation of changes in first partnership formation. Some changes have been observed between the development period (1965-74) and the crisis period (1981-90) in gender patterns of family formation: on the one hand, for males, the positive relationship between the probabilities of entering into a first partnership and educational attainment and labour-market position has been strengthened; on the other hand, for women, the negative relationship between the labour market and first partnership formation has disappeared

Son diferentes las uniones consensuales y los matrimonios

La pregunta que se plantea en este articulo es si existe en Espana una distincion entre las parejas jovenes que se encuentran conviviendo en union consensual y aquellas que lo hacen legalmente casadas (variable dicotomica). Las fuentes de datos utilizadas son los censos de poblacion de 1991 y de 2001. Se analiza el rango de edades 20-39 anos. Se utiliza como tecnica estadistica la regresion logistica. Se calcula un modelo por separado entre los sexos y para cada uno de los momentos temporales analizados. En conclusion, se observa que la cohabitacion tiene unas caracteristicas muy diferentes al matrimonio, pues los cohabitantes tienen menos hijos, son mas jovenes, presentan mayor distancia de edad entre miembros de la pareja, residen en mayor medida en una vivienda de alquiler, siguen en mayor medida un modelo en que solo la mujer trabaja o no trabaja ninguno de los miembros de la pareja, tienen mayor nivel de instruccion y presentan una mayor heterogeneidad.
