material form Stanway appears to break down. One might also be wary of the assigning of particular artefacts to certain tribes. In contrast, much of the evidence from Stanway, and elsewhere in the first century ad, suggests that a multiplicity of iden tities was being expressed at this time which cannot neatly be characterized as reflecting tribal groups, or even ‘British’ and ‘Gallic’. Such interpretation seems strangely at odds with the claims in the report that the grave goods stress the mobility of people, suggesting such individuals could move between communities, potentially reconfiguring and reshaping their identities as they did so. These issues of interpretation aside, it is a mark of the quality of both the excavation and the report that such questions will undoubtedly be stimulated by the Stanway finds and the report is highly recom mended as a significant contribution to these debates.
